“Why is your old ass here? It can’t be for the women. Rumor is you can’t get it up anymore,” I say.
Rage fills his face. I told you I know everything about everything. This motherfucker ruined my family. I’ve been holding a fully loaded clip for him for years. Mr. Knight is the only reason I haven’t emptied it.
I had to be satisfied with the indictment that had him disbarred. I’m still pissed his slimy ass was able to get out of that. Next time though.
Suddenly, his eyes light up and he looks back to Skittles. My chest tightens. I know that look and I don’t like it.
He roars with laughter. “You’re way out of your league, William,” he says tauntingly.
“What the fuck are you talking about?”
He nods to Skittles. “If she’s who I think she is, her family will never let her stay tied up with a lowlife like you. A fancy suit doesn’t make a man.”
“That suit you’re wearing isn’t that fancy and we already know you’re not a man.” I shrug.
“Mock me if you want.”
“I don’t have the time or the care to mock you,” I reply and go to leave this conversation behind.
“If I’m right, you are about to become the fuckup I knew you would be,” he says to my back.
I spin around and get into his face. “You’re just pissed you can’t move shit in this city without sending one of your men to suck my dick. Fuck you and the cunt that birthed you,” I seethe.
“In this life you never know who’s working for who. Careful, son,” he says and pats my cheek.
I shove his hand away and go to knock him on his ass. Skittles grabs my arm and jumps between us. The red before my eyes recedes a little as her words break through.
“Pit, don’t. It’s not worth it. Come on, babe.”
“Listen to her. You don’t want to embarrass your girlfriend and her family, do you?”
Skittles
I’m about to drop this guy my damn self. If I break a nail trying to keep Pit from choking him out, I’m going to lose it and we can jump this jerk.
My father and I can clash, but he would never say these types of things to me. This man is so hateful. My father just has screwed up priorities.
“Babe, don’t,” I whisper to Pit when he looks like he’s going to start for his father again.
He shakes his head. Then looks down at me and searches my face. He dips his head to kiss my lips tenderly.
I look up at him a little confused. That kiss held something different. He looks over my head and nods. Then, without another word, he walks off.
Roman appears out of thin air. “Come on, I’ll get you home.”
Chapter 21
The Inevitable
Skittles
I sit in the window seat at my home staring out at the street below while brushing my hair. My thoughts are all over the place. I’ve been consumed by what happened earlier tonight.
That look in Pit’s eyes. It’s haunting me. I can’t put my finger on it. It feels so familiar, like an emotion I know too well.
Hurt… feeling like I’m not enough—I don’t know. It seemed to be in that family. I can’t shake it as much as I try.
It made me think a lot about my dad and our relationship. Then my thoughts have been heavily on Shawna. It’s the sadness in her eyes in the pictures I get that’s tearing me apart.
I’m the fighter. I’m the one that takes care of my friends and loved ones. Yet this time I can’t jump right in and tear shit up.
I inhale and starve off the panic attack that rises. Pit is usually here to keep me from spiraling, but he has his own problems. And that’s killing me, I want to be there for him.
“You’re doing the best you can, Ven,” I breathe as I pull my hair into a ponytail on top of my head.
I close my eyes and lean my face against the glass. The coolness helps a little. I fight back the tears.
I think to call Kelex, but Pit is the only one I want to talk to. I miss his voice rumbling through me as I lie on his chest. I want to get lost in tracing his tats.
I open my mouth and release a silent scream. It’s all I can do not to allow this panic attack to overtake me. I press my palms to the glass and breathe.
I’m startled when my doorbell rings. I take a few deep breaths before I get up and pad barefoot downstairs to the front door. Hope blooms. It has to be Pit.
When I open the door, he’s standing there with his head bent, his hands in his pants pockets. He’s still in his tux, his shirt is unbuttoned to nearly the center of his chest, and his tie hangs loosely around his neck. He’s so beautiful.
When he lifts his head, those gorgeous eyes come into view. I’m left breathless at the sight. I open my mouth to speak, but he pulls his hand from his pocket and places his finger to my lips. With the shake of his head, he backs me into the house.
I look up at him with my brow threaded. He lifts me up and I wrap my legs around his waist, he presses his forehead to mine as he moves through my place, up to my bedroom. I cup his face and close my eyes.
The panic is gone. I can breathe again. He’s giving me my sanity back. He’s been the calm in this storm.
I open my eyes when he places me on the bed. I sit with my knees pulled into my chest as we hold each other’s gaze, and he starts to undress. When he’s naked, he comes to the foot of the bed and reaches for my cotton tank. I lift my arms to allow him to remove it.
He peels
