Charlieโs eyes grew misty as he looked out the window at the old wooden swing hanging from the large tree shading the back yard. Their daughter, Bree, hadn't been too happy about their choice to bring Damien into their home. To Charlie, it was still one of the happiest moments since he finally had a son.
Damien's foster mom passed away from spinal meningitis when he turned sixteen. It was devastating to the family because it happened only a year after the accident which led them to get Damien out of Big Timber as fast as they could. The pain was so great, Damien closed himself off from everyone, including his dad.
They weren't his real parents but they loved him as if he were their own child. Their love and understanding helped in the healing of a wound inflicted by his biological mom.
The conversation died as many of them did. Charlie broke the silence by getting up to grab his jacket and truck keys. โWe better get going. I'll need the truck for work. Mind asking Rob or Chelsea to bring you home? I should get a cruiser today so you can have the truck.โ
โYeah, I can ask Rob for a lift. Thanks.โ
Robert McAllister, one of Damienโs two remaining friends, still lived in Big Timber after Damien moved. Chelsea Masterson was the second. She was one of the most flirtatious girls in town and harbored a not so secret crush on Damien.
Following Sarahโs death, Charlie brought Damien back so he could recover in familiar surroundings as suggested by the therapist.
When an opportunity opened for Charlie to become the new police chief, Charlie took the position despite Damienโs many objections.

Damien jumped out of the passenger's side of the truck, closing the door after they arrived at the college. The front lawn bustled with new students joining the transfers to head for the auditorium.
โDame.โ
Damien turned back around. โYeah?โ
โI love you, son. Things will get better, I promise.โ
Damien nodded. He wasn't reassured by his dad's words but he was grateful he was at least trying. The thought made Damien angry at himself. Heโd detached from everything and just wasnโt capable of being more receptive.
After Charlie pulled off, Damien turned to walk up to the auditorium. He paused to look around until his attention fell on a young woman with long raven hair sitting on the cement wall serving as a barrier between the grassy knoll and the sidewalk. His heart pounded behind his ribs at how beautiful she was. He kept staring as she rose from her sitting position to make her way towards the library.
She wore a black shirt cut so low he could almost see the tops of her breasts layered under a deep green shirt with the sleeves rolled up to her elbows. She wore low-riding black nylon pants much like something a barista at a coffee shop would wear. The black leather boots came up her to calves and tied in the back with leather laces.
The way she walked was so lithe and graceful. The movement of her hips reminded him of a dancer.
Damien swallowed the knot in his throat so he could keep breathing. He couldn't help it, his jaw almost hit the ground. His head started to hurt, hitting him with a sudden wave of dizziness. His heart pounded hard behind his chest.
What? Whatโs going on? There was something oddly familiar about the woman. He couldnโt understand where heโd seen her before.
Once the episode passed, he began to stand slowly when Chelsea ran into him at full speed. The impact threatening to take them both down if not for his quick thinking to grip the armrest of the bench.
โDamien!โ Chelsea wrapped her arms around his neck. โItโs so good to see you! How long has it been? Ten years?โ Chelsea was a bouncy blonde who only came up to Damien's chest. Sheโd once been a cheerleader when they were in high school together.
Her crush on Damien had been common knowledge. She often bashed anyone who dared to try to ask him out with fierce gossip or rumors. Her deep blue eyes and large breasts made most of the football players in the school chase after her. The encounters wouldnโt end well and sheโd often shoot them down in ways that made even Damien's masculinity ache.
โYeah. Itโs good to see you again too, Chels.โ Damien replied, looking down then up again, hoping to see the raven haired woman. His eyes scanned every face to see if he could find her but she was gone โWhere'd she go?โ
Chelsea turned her head to follow Damien's gaze, her lips pursed in annoyance. โShe? Dame, do you have a girlfriend?โ
โWhat? No, it's not like that.โ He ignored the look of relief on her face, prying her arms off from around his neck. โI just thought I saw someone I knew. I have no idea how but she seemed familiar to me.โ
โMaybe she goes to school here. You might see her again or even have a class with her. Come on or we'll be late!โ Chelsea took his hand and pulled so hard Damien stumbled forward.
Deep inside him, he hoped and wanted to see the raven-haired woman again.

Jillian stood behind a tree, ignoring the glances and cat calls of the passersby. A low growl escaped her throat.
Sheโd had him. So close to tempting him to come to her only to have his attention ripped away.
Another young man came up to stand next to her. From the looks of him, he was about to lay yet another corny pick up line on her.
Annoyed, Jill snapped at him, her voice low. She didnโt bother to change her closed off
