“I blame me. I should have left him when I first found out. I tried, but I loved him, God help me. Everything I am is because of him. He gave me my career, my life, my children. I just couldn’t leave him, no matter how depraved he was. I sacrificed the two of you and now look at you. Your brother’s picked up his drug habit and you—”
“I’m nothing like Dad.”
“You both have so many unresolved issues with your father. The son of a bitch died before anyone could hold his feet to the fire for the pain he caused.”
“Maybe he’s suffering for it now, wherever he is.”
“You need to talk to someone, Tristan.”
“I am. I have been for months, you know that.”
“Are you hurting that girl?”
“Believe me, Mom, I’m not doing anything she doesn’t want me to do.”
“Because if you are, I can’t protect you.”
“What’s happening between us is nothing like what Dad did to those girls. I promise you.”
She smiles and nods her head. At least, she half believes the lie I’m telling her.
“She seems like a nice girl,” she says.
“Very much so.”
“I’m happy for you.”
I just couldn’t help but laugh at Tyler. Mr. Garrett almost yanked my arm off when he caught him pretending to check me out. I knew he was playing around because judging by that blonde bombshell that just left, I am nowhere near his type.
Finally rescuing me from him trying to get me drunk, Mr. Garrett took me for a walk around the grounds before dinner. We now stand on the patio just off the kitchen.
“Your family is so nice,” I tell him. “They think we’re in love. I hate lying to them.”
“I know. It’ll be over soon.”
“They have no idea about your lifestyle, do they?”
“Mom has her suspicions, but that’s all they are,” he tells me, tipping my chin up. “And I plan to keep it that way.”
He kisses me but pulls back when we hear a gasp. We see Beverly standing behind us, looking at what I’m sure she mistook as a loving gesture between her son and his girlfriend.
“Dinner’s ready,” she tells us, grinning much like Tyler did when I first saw him at the door. You’d think he’s never had a girlfriend before.
A woman who I’m guessing is the cook, serves us our meal and we eat in comfortable silence. My nerves have finally settled down and Tristan even seems more relaxed.
“So, Sydney,” Rosemary, as she insists I call her, says to me. “Beverly tells us that you and Tristan met through a friend.”
“A few years ago,” I tell her, as Tristan stares at me, knowing I’m uncomfortable with the lying. “We’d lost touch, but he just happened to run into me one day, asked me out and here we are.” I smile as I sip my red wine. That’s pretty close to the truth.
“And bless your heart, you said yes,” Tyler teases. “Sydney, really, what do you see in my cousin?”
I laugh, but then when all eyes fall on me, I know they are waiting for an answer. I look at Tristan and I can see how upsetting the question is to him. Maybe he thinks I don’t have an answer, but I do. I see the one thing he tries hard to hide, the one thing I can always see in his eyes.
“He has a beautiful heart,” I tell Tyler and Tristan frowns in response.
“Yes, he does,” Beverly whispers, giving me a soft smile.
“We’ll just have to take your word for it, Sydney,” Joe says.
“Sounds like the love bug has bitten you two,” Rosemary chimes in.
“Truly,” Tristan agrees and I nearly choke on my wine.
He grins, lightly patting me on my back. He’s enjoying this a little too much. He leans in to kiss me and I see his mother watching me like a hawk. I lean in, kissing him back until he tries to ram his tongue down my throat. I pull away, pretending to choke again.
“Sydney and I must be going,” Tristan says, getting up to leave. He pulls my chair out so I can stand.
“Already?” Beverly asks. “We haven’t even had dessert.”
“I have an early morning meeting,” he tells them. “Joe, you stay and enjoy yourself. I can drive us back.”
Joe tosses him the keys and I wait while he says his goodbyes to his aunt and then his cousin, who makes it clear he thinks the reason for our hasty departure is sex related. I have a feeling he doesn’t know how right he is.
We ride back in silence with his hands gripping the steering wheel. He pulls me out of the SUV, dragging me through the door and into the foyer.
“Tristan? I mean, sir, what’s wrong.”
Before the doors can even close completely, he has me pressed up against the wall as he takes my face in his hands and kisses me hard on the mouth. He takes my wrists and holds them above my head in a vice-like grip with one hand while the other inches between my thighs.
“Why did you say that?” he asks me as I gasp for air at him suddenly ripping his lips from mine.
“Sir?”
“That I have a beautiful heart.”
“Because it’s true.”
“I don’t have a heart.”
“That’s not true.”
“You’re back to fighting me,” he says.
“I’m not. I just don’t agree with you.”
He takes a step back to look at me.
“This damn dress has been driving me crazy all fucking night. Why did you pick white?”
“I don’t know.”
“It’s so pure, so perfect,” he says. Letting my hands go, he grabs the top of my dress and rips it away from me with a jolt. My tits spring free and with nothing to keep them warm, my nipples harden. I look around like a trapped animal as he watches me, unzipping his pants. “No fighting this time,” he demands as he rips my panties off.
I gasp loudly when he enters me. He yanks my legs up and wraps them around his hips. I
