said she had seen Jacob at DairyQueen in Wells. Another woman reported seeing him in Kittery. One crazy old mansaid he had a premonition that Jacob had been abducted by aliens. Hotlinesbring out all the wackos.

Allen walked through the office door with Frankie on aleash. As he crossed the parking lot on his way to the grass, Donnie pulled indriving his Mini Cooper; he had a passenger. Allen unhooked Frankie, and thedog ran for the grass.

Donnie parked and got out of his car.

โ€œHow's it going out there?โ€ Allen asked.

โ€œWe searched all morning at a place called Highland FarmPreserve,โ€ Donnie answered. โ€œNothing.โ€

Donnie's passenger walked up to the two men. He nodded atAllen.

โ€œAllen, this is Bill Rankins,โ€ said Donnie. โ€œHe was mysearch partner this morning.โ€

โ€œHow's it going?โ€ said Allen.

Bill shrugged. โ€œI wish it was going better,โ€ he saidsomberly. He glanced over at door number four. โ€œThat boy's poor parents.โ€

โ€œWe just came back so I could change my tennis shoes,โ€Donnie said. He lifted his mud soaked shoe to show Allen. โ€œThen we're meetingon Jefferson Lane to search a wooded area between here and Kittery.โ€

โ€œFrankie and I are headed to Portsmouth in a bit to put upfliers,โ€ Allen said. โ€œHow long you think you're sticking around?โ€

โ€œUntil we know something,โ€ Donnie replied. โ€œI couldn't justleave without knowing.โ€

Allen nodded. โ€œCam and Mildred said the same thing. Theywent with a group to search some caves somewhere.โ€

Frankie finished his business and ran back to Allen. Donniescratched the dog's head.

โ€œI better get these shoes changed,โ€ Donnie said.

โ€œAnd Frankie and I better head to Portsmouth,โ€ said Allen.

The three men parted, and Allen and Frankie jumped inAllen's Jeep. As Allen was about to pull out onto Long Sands Road, his cellphone rang.

โ€œHey, Mike. What's up?โ€ Allen answered. He slid the shifterinto park.

โ€œAllen, just finished reading your manuscript. Fantastic. This is some of your best writing to date. We've definitely got a best sellerhere.โ€

โ€œThanks, Mike.โ€

โ€œHow about if we shoot for a November release, right beforethe holidays?โ€

โ€œWhatever you think, Mike. That's up to you.โ€

โ€œWhat's the matter, pal? You sound down. Are you taking yourmedication? You're not drinking are you?โ€

โ€œYou're my publisher, Mike, not my shrink.โ€

โ€œI'm also your cousin, Allen. What's wrong?โ€

Allen glanced over at the flier-filled manila envelope onhis passenger seat. โ€œIt's a long story,โ€ he said. โ€œI gotta go, Mike. I'll callyou later.โ€

โ€œSure thing, Allen. You take care of yourself.โ€

Allen hung up his cell phone and tossed it onto theenvelope. Just as he was about to put the Jeep back in gear, someone knocked onhis driver's side window.

โ€œJesus!โ€ Allen said, almost jumping out of his skin.

โ€œRoll down the window,โ€ said Mya.

Allen rolled it down. โ€œYou scared the shit outta me,โ€ hesaid.

โ€œSorry. Where ya headed?โ€

โ€œPortsmouth.โ€

โ€œWhy?โ€

โ€œPut up fliers.โ€

โ€œYou want some company?โ€ She looked into the back seat. โ€œImean besides Frankie. Hey, boy.โ€

Frankie was trying to get his head between the window andAllen's seat.

โ€œSure, I'd like that,โ€ Allen said. He reached down andpressed the button to unlock the doors. โ€œHop in.โ€

Mya walked around the Jeep and got in. She placed theenvelope on her lap. Allen shifted into drive, and pulled out of the parkinglot.

โ€œI called you a bunch of times,โ€ Allen said, figuring hemight as well get it out there. โ€œLeft a few messages.โ€

โ€œI know. I'm sorry.โ€

โ€œSo, what's going on? I thought we had a nice time on ourdate.โ€

โ€œWe did. I had a very nice time.โ€

โ€œThen what's the problem?โ€

โ€œIt's complicated.โ€

โ€œIt's complicated? What is this, a Facebook status?โ€

โ€œDon't make fun of me.โ€

โ€œI'm not making fun of you. I just want to know why youseemed so interested in me โ€ฆ and then suddenly you didn't. Friday afternoonwhen we spoke on the beach, you said you had a great time. We kissed a few times.Had some laughs. I thought we were hitting it off. Well, were we ornot?โ€

Mya didn't reply.

Allen brought the Jeep to a stop at the stop sign, thenturned left to remain on Long Sands Road.

โ€œThen you show up today and tell me once again that you hada very nice time. Now you're just sitting there, refusing to answer me. If youdon't want to see me again, just say so.โ€

Allen looked over at Mya. She just stared out the frontwindshield at the road ahead.

โ€œIs it Jim Tucker?โ€ Allen asked. โ€œDid he say something?โ€

Still nothing from Mya.

Allen played his trump card. โ€œYou told Harriet Rose thatTucker had anger and jealousy issues.โ€

โ€œHow do you know that?โ€ Mya snapped.

โ€œHarriet told me when I was over there for dinner. What'sthat all about?โ€

Mya took a deep breath and exhaled. โ€œJim stopped me on thestreet Friday afternoon when I was walking to workโ€”right after you and Ispoke.โ€

โ€œOkay.โ€

โ€œHe asked me to get in the car. He said he would give me aride the rest of the way. I told him I didn't think that was a good idea, andhe said he just wanted to talk.โ€

โ€œTalk about what?โ€

โ€œUs.โ€

โ€œYou and me?โ€

โ€œHim and me. He told me he wanted to get backtogether and see if we could make it work.โ€

โ€œWhat did you tell him?โ€

โ€œI told him we had tried three times before, and that Ididn't think it was a good idea. We just weren't meant to be together.โ€

โ€œHow did he respond?โ€

โ€œHe punched the roof of the car a bunch of times, and thenpunched the dashboard and steering wheel.โ€

โ€œHe didn't hit you, did he?โ€

โ€œNo, but he yelled a lot. He kept asking me what was wrongwith me that I couldn't see we were meant to be together.โ€

Allen shook his head. โ€œWhat's wrong with you?โ€ herepeated. โ€œIt doesn't seem like you're the problem. Why were you late forwork?โ€

โ€œBecause he kept driving around. I was afraid to sayanything until after he calmed down. Then I had him drop me off at my place andI drove to work.โ€

โ€œSo, you are afraid of him.โ€

โ€œThat's not what I meant.โ€

โ€œAre you sure?โ€ Allen turned left off Spur Road, and speddown the ramp, merging onto I-95 toward Portsmouth. โ€œSo, why shut me
