will hit on you.โ€

โ€œThanks, babe.โ€

She steps away and twirls. โ€œWell, arenโ€™t you going to compliment me? This magic took hours.โ€

I grin. โ€œGorgeous. Youโ€™ll have the guys falling all over themselves.โ€

She laughs and loops her hand in my arm. โ€œThatโ€™s the plan. You be sure to point out the successful ones, Green, that was our deal.โ€

โ€œRight.โ€

We walk in the doors, following several other couples that I donโ€™t recognize, and stop at a check-in table.

I give my name, and one of the women working the table gets big-eyed.

โ€œWait, youโ€™re Tim Oโ€™Leary?โ€

I nod.

The two of them laugh.

โ€œMy God, youโ€™re nothing like the guy I remember from high school,โ€ one of them murmurs. She lays a hand on her chest. โ€œIโ€™m Heather Cantrell. Donโ€™t you remember me? I was on the cheer squad.โ€

I suddenly do remember. She obviously hit her prime in high school because she hasnโ€™t aged well. I nod. โ€œRight. Heather, how are you?โ€

โ€œFabulous. I sell insurance now.โ€

โ€œGreat.โ€ I take my nametag and move along before she tries to sell me a policy.

She leans over the table. โ€œSave me a dance, Tim.โ€

Misty giggles as we walk down the marble tiled hall, and says in a singsong voice, โ€œShe thinks youโ€™re sexy. She wants your body.โ€

I huff a laugh and roll my eyes. โ€œLord, save me.โ€

We pass a door with a brass plate that says Powder Room. Misty pulls on my arm.

โ€œIโ€™ll just be a minute.โ€

I wait in the hall for what seems like an eternity before she returns.

โ€œThat bathroom is amazing. Itโ€™s like a beauty parlor. They have everything. Makeup and hairspray and perfume and . . . Oh, look, mints.โ€ She sticks her tongue out to show me the small breath mint lying on it.

โ€œI thought you just had to pee.โ€

โ€œI did, and I enjoyed every minute of it.โ€ She leans toward me conspiratorially. โ€œThe seats were heated.โ€

โ€œMaybe someone was just there before you.โ€

โ€œDonโ€™t be gross. Not here.โ€

Violin music carries to us from a trio set up in a foyer we pass through, and then weโ€™re entering the grand ballroom.

โ€œHoly shit,โ€ I whisper, taking in the gold gilt trim and the huge chandeliers.

โ€œWow,โ€ Misty utters, staring up at the vaulted ceilings painted with angels.

โ€œIโ€™ve never seen anything like it, have you?โ€ I ask.

She huffs a laugh. โ€œMe? Hell no.โ€ She squeezes my bicep. โ€œThis is going to be the best night. Thanks for bringing me, Green.โ€

โ€œLetโ€™s get a drink.โ€ I lead her to the bar and get her a flute of champagne and a scotch on the rocks for myself, feeling like a turd in a punch bowl.

I scan the room for Sara, but donโ€™t spot her. Misty, meanwhile, is scoping for cute guys.

She tugs on my arm. โ€œOh, oh, whoโ€™s that cute guy over there?โ€

I follow her gaze. โ€œSimon Keller? Heโ€™s a class-A asshole. You can do better.โ€

โ€œDamn it, the cute ones always are.โ€

Thereโ€™s a DJ playing, and couples are out on the dance floor. We stand by the bar and people watch. I spot several faces I remember. I dip my head to Misty and murmur, โ€œItโ€™s weird how some classmates have changed so much, and some not at all. The ones you think will turn out one way donโ€™t turn out that way at all. Life sure is surprising.โ€

โ€œThat it is. Do you see her?โ€ Misty leans to peer around me, still scoping out the crowd.

I raise my glass to my lips. โ€œNope.โ€

โ€œSo, tell me about this girl. Whatโ€™s she like?โ€

โ€œSara was a misfit like me. We shared a table in the cafeteria one day and when our geeky chemistry teacher walked by and I laughed at the bowtie he was wearing. She snorted milk out of her nose and from then on we were fast friends.โ€

โ€œEww, gross.โ€

โ€œYou had to be there, I guess.โ€

โ€œWhat else? What did she look like?โ€

โ€œShe was always changing the way she looked. One day sheโ€™d look Goth, the next sheโ€™d have her hair in pigtails. You could never pigeonhole her into one clichรฉ.โ€

โ€œWas she smart?โ€

โ€œVery. She helped me pass several classes. If it wasnโ€™t for her, I might not have graduated.โ€

โ€œBut what does she look like?โ€ Misty whines again.

I shrug. โ€œLong hair. Pretty.โ€

โ€œYou have to give me more than that! Like, what celebrity does she look like?โ€

โ€œFuck, I donโ€™t know.โ€

โ€œUgh. Youโ€™re impossible.โ€

I take a sip of my drink. โ€œOkay, if I had to compare, Iโ€™d say she looked like that chick from 13 Going On 30.โ€

โ€œYou mean Jennifer Garner?โ€

โ€œI guess.โ€

โ€œWait. When did you see 13 Going On 30?โ€

I shrug. โ€œI got roped into babysitting Coleโ€™s bunch one night. Thatโ€™s what Melissa wanted to watch, so I sat with her, and watched it.โ€

She arcs a brow. โ€œJennifer Garner, huh? So this girl is tall and beautiful?โ€

โ€œYeah, but with glasses.โ€

โ€œOh, thatโ€™s her one big flaw? She wore glasses?โ€

โ€œI didnโ€™t say it was a flaw.โ€

Misty sips her champagne, staring out over the crowd. She seems miffed, but I canโ€™t figure why.

Not looking at me, she says, โ€œI suppose she has dimples, too.โ€

โ€œYep.โ€

โ€œI hate her already.โ€

I chuckle.

โ€œI wonder what she looks like now,โ€ she says, giving me the side eye. She knows Iโ€™m nervous about this, and now sheโ€™s just taunting me. I think about how little Miss Cheerleader Heather turned out, and my anxiety deepens.

Misty takes pity on me and swats my arm. โ€œQuit worrying, Green. If she looked like Jennifer Garner in 13 Going On 30 back then, she probably looks like Jennifer Garner in Draft Day now.

Iโ€™ve seen the film, and that chick was a knockout. I smooth a hand over my short, nearly shaved head, hoping I look okay. Thereโ€™s a wall of mirrors behind us and I catch my silver club rings flash in the light. I wonder if the whole MC thing will turn Sara off. I wonโ€™t bring it up, but she may spot my rings. Earlier tonight, I stood in front of the bathroom mirror debating taking them off, and now Iโ€™m ashamed I even considered it. I wonโ€™t pretend to be something Iโ€™m not. This tux is as
