donโ€™t know who specifically, but theyโ€™re one of the psychics on campus.โ€

Wade snickers. โ€œConvenient, donโ€™t you think?โ€

โ€œMaybe? Regardless, he warned me to be careful. Thatโ€™s all,โ€ I say softly. โ€œI just need to know if thatโ€™s true.โ€

โ€œWhat do you think?โ€ Wade says, his dark eyebrows blocking out anything but his black pupils.

โ€œOf course I want to believe heโ€™s wrong. I justโ€”why would he say that?โ€

โ€œYou know why, Autumn,โ€ Wade retorts. โ€œHe has a thing for you.โ€

โ€œNot the other guy. And even if that were true about Colton, weโ€™ve neverโ€ฆโ€

Wadeโ€™s eyes open wide. โ€œNever what?โ€

โ€œNo, nothing about Colt. Itโ€™s justโ€ฆyouโ€™ve never told me what kind of supernatural powers you have, or are going to have. Youโ€™re always so interested in discovering my powers, but weโ€™ve never really talked about yours.โ€

Wade shrugs. โ€œThatโ€™s because thereโ€™s nothing to tell. My powers, if I actually do have any, none of it will reveal itself until certain events are triggered, and who knows? Maybe Iโ€™ll never get the chance to be supernatural. My family skips generations sometimes. I might get powers, I might not. Why do you think Iโ€™m so interested in helping you uncover yours?โ€

I sigh. โ€œIโ€™m sorry, itโ€™s justโ€ฆโ€

โ€œLook, I get it. People are filling your head with nonsense and itโ€™s easy to let that infiltrate your mind. I was worried about that before you left. Especially if Iโ€™m not there to defend myself. I wish you knew you could trust me, but I guess Iโ€™m not that lucky.โ€

โ€œWade, thatโ€™s not fairโ€ฆโ€

โ€œI gotta go. Grandpaโ€™s not doing well today. Weโ€™ll talk about this later,โ€ Wade says, glancing over his shoulder.

โ€œI didnโ€™t meanโ€”โ€

โ€œDoesnโ€™t matter. Itโ€™s not life or death. This is. So, I guess Iโ€™ll talk to you later, Autumn.โ€

With that, the call ends and Iโ€™m left staring at my phoneโ€™s background picture of the two of us in happier times. Clicking off my phone, I flop backward onto the bed.

Am I ruining a good thing here by entertaining what Colt said? Wade has been nothing but supportive and sweet. Heโ€™s damn-near perfect and Iโ€™m questioning him? God, Iโ€™m so stupid.

โ€œHey, sweetie. Are you okay?โ€ Dad says from the open doorway.

I sit up, fighting back the urge to cry. โ€œIโ€™mโ€”everythingโ€™s fine.โ€

โ€œYeah, you look the spitting image of fine. I hope you donโ€™t think I was spying. I was coming to see if you wanted anything for supper. But I kinda overheard some of thatโ€ฆโ€ he says, wincing slightly. โ€œMay I come in?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s your house,โ€ I say, splaying my arm out in offering.

โ€œBut itโ€™s your space now, and I respect that,โ€ he says taking a step inside.

โ€œWell, thanks,โ€ I mutter.

โ€œWanna tell me whatโ€™s going on?โ€ Dad asks, stopping in the middle of the room and eyeing me expectantly.

I sigh. โ€œEverythingโ€™s justโ€ฆgetting so confusing.โ€

โ€œWelcome to the land of the living, sweet girl,โ€ Dad chuckles.

I raise my gaze to him and nod. โ€œYeah, I suppose. Itโ€™s justโ€”on one hand, I have Wade. Dad, I really wish youโ€™d meet him. Heโ€™s amazing and I know youโ€™ll love him as much as I do,โ€ I bite my lip to keep it from quivering. Taking another cleansing breath, I continue. โ€œOn the other hand, I have these friendsโ€ฆtheyโ€™re helping me to make sense of some things. But Wade thinks Colt isโ€”โ€

โ€œYour friends are the Gilbert twins?โ€ Dad interjects.

I nod. โ€œYeah.โ€

His eyebrows tug downward and his jaw sets. His lack of words is deafening.

โ€œSomething wrong?โ€ I finally say to break the silence.

Shaking his head, he walks over to my desk. My eyes flit to the dresser, which is haphazardly hiding the hidden door. My pulse races as I flit through my options.

I stand up, walking over to the door to the hallway and lean against it, hoping to draw his eyes away from the dresser.

โ€œNot wrong so muchโ€ฆโ€ he says, looking over his shoulder at me. โ€œItโ€™s just, you should be cautious with them.โ€

โ€œCautious? How?โ€

โ€œItโ€™s hard to explain, but their family and ours have a long history,โ€ he says, taking a step away from the desk and toward me.

โ€œThey told me that. Theyโ€™ve been helping me understand the history of Windhaven a bit better.โ€

Dadโ€™s eyebrows fly upward, and he takes another step forward. โ€œThey have? What else have they been doing?โ€

My mouth goes dry at the sudden interrogation and Iโ€™m acutely aware of the fact that everyone in my life has their own secretsโ€”my dad being one of them. Iโ€™m not entirely certain how much information I want to divulge until I piece out which ones I can trust.

โ€œN-nothing. Mostly, theyโ€™ve been helping me with my studies. Theyโ€™re good people,โ€ I stammer.

Dad watches me closely, but his head tips in acknowledgement.

โ€œDad, do you have any powers?โ€ I ask. Itโ€™s never seemed like a good time to ask him, but itโ€™s obvious any supernatural abilities I may have stem from his side of the family.

His blue eyes sparkle, and he runs a hand through his strawberry-blond hair. โ€œIf you count being able to move around this house like a ninja, then sureโ€”โ€

โ€œNot what I meant,โ€ I say, shaking my head.

Dad chuckles. โ€œI know. Well, I have always gotten feelingsโ€”vibrations of energies. Sometimes theyโ€™d make sense and other times, not so much. I always wished I had a more powerful ability.โ€

I bite the inside of my cheek. โ€œWhat do you know about Abigail and Warren?โ€

Again, surprise flashes across Dadโ€™s face. โ€œThatโ€™s a pretty specific question. Where did you learn about them?โ€

I fiddle with the doorknob, gazing at the floor. โ€œWe were at the library. I wanted to learn more about our family history and the town. Plusโ€ฆโ€โ€”I pause, trying to decide what to tell himโ€”โ€œI think Iโ€™ve been seeing Abigail.โ€

Surprisingly, Dad smiles. โ€œI thought you might.โ€

โ€œYou did?โ€ I say, practically squeaking.

Dadโ€™s face scrunches and he says, โ€œYeah, that day on the landing, I could sense her energy, but I didnโ€™t want her to upset you in case you felt things the same way I do. But it seemed like there was more with you. I was hoping youโ€™d trust me enough to open
