Stoker guffawed. “Let me guess, you want to know what Anthony’s up to, yes? Maybe what he plans to do next.” Stoker spat at Damien’s feet. “Go fuck yourself, Pierce. You and your has-been enforcer. I’d rather die than give you what you want.”
Damien once again looked back at Kain. He made a sarcastic comment about the term “has-been” and then turned his attention back to Stoker. “Alright, your choice. I’d kill you myself but it’s not worth my time or energy to do so. Zane, make it painful, okay? He’s screwed me over one too many times.”
Stoker glanced at Zane, his breath growing quicker as the silver-haired vampire moved from the wall. “Wait, wait.” The noble stuttered between words. “Alright. Anthony isn’t the one in charge here.”
Kain already figured that out. “Tell us something we do not know.”
“He hasn’t revealed his full plan to me. All I know is he’s slowly descending into insanity. He’s not making sense.” Stoker rambled information Kain already knew.
So far, the noble gave him nothing to go on to find a way to save Tala without offering himself as a shield. “It has something to do with the grand opening of Crimson, his new casino. That much I do know.”
Kain’s brow creased as he pondered the new name. He’d known Anthony Cardoza owned most of Great Falls and its surrounding land, but this new casino never appeared on the maps within the city.
Angry, Damien demanded Stoker tell him where the new casino was to be built. At first, Stoker declined to tell him but after the lycan slashed him across the face with silver claws, the vampire told him.
The main problem that lie before Kain and the pack was how to go about getting to Anthony and finding out more about his primary plan. If the casino was being built outside the city, it gave Anthony and his vampires more room to move around without destroying his reputation in the human world.
With nothing else to learn from Stoker, Damien left Zane and Magnus to do what they saw fit with the former noble. Behind him, Stoker cried and begged for Damien to spare him, apologizing for all he’d done. The sight disgusted Kain since he knew how much of a coward Stoker Cromwell was.
“Okay, so now we know the location but not much more than that,” Damien said, his voice resembling a disappointed sigh.
Kain mulled over their options. There weren’t many lying before the lycans. “There is only one way we can learn more, Damien. Zane has said it before. We cannot simply get to the Don through traditional methods. We would be killed on sight.”
The same look of revelation dawned over Damien’s face. It was the look he had when he devised the plan to defeat the vampires at the Circle of Stones. “That’s it, Kain.”
Leaning against the open door to his car, Kain stared at his friend, wondering what went through his mind.
“You can’t get to Anthony.” Damien dropped into the seat of Kain’s car. Kain did the same, shutting it and pulling out of the crescent driveway to the main gate.
During the drive home, Damien didn’t say much else. At least not that Kain could hear. Everything came out as a mumble or a sudden burst of a mix of “ah-has” and cursing. To avoid breaking Damien’s concentration, Kain kept quiet, relying on his mental connection to Damien to try and make sense of his thoughts.
Kain stopped his car, put it into park and looked at his friend. “Mind telling me what this is about?”
Damien grinned and got out of the car without saying anything. When they got to the steps, he stopped Kain. “Get Gabriel, Lune, Cade, Jill, Scott, everyone, including Zane.” Damien put his hand on Kain’s shoulder. His face looked pained but resigned to do what he felt needed to be done. “Kain, you’re going to do what you do best. Be a shield.”
For once, Kain was beyond confused. Damien hated it when he did what he was raised to do, argued with him over every time he’d had to. Now, the alpha appeared to want him to deliver himself into the hands of the enemy. “Damien, for the gods’ sake, make some sense.”
Damien put both of his hands on Kain’s shoulders. “You once told Jill she couldn’t stop me from doing what a Purifier is supposed to do. All this time, I’ve interfered with what you were born to do, protect others even at the cost of your own life and body. I’m sorry for that. Now, I need you to do it for all of us.”
Kain recalled the conversation with Jill. It’d happened after Chelsea was turned. Damien wanted to try and see if his childhood friend was still capable of being saved.
“Kain,” Damien said, his amethyst eyes burrowing into Kain’s. “You’re going to give yourself up.”
Chapter Twenty-One
A few hours passed before Damien’s small living room became crowded with both lycan and vampire alike. Zane, Steele, Magnus and Dante stayed near the doorway with concerned looks on their faces. Gabriel, Lune, Scott, Cade, Jill, Tyler and Joel all remained spread all over the floor. Their faces mirrored those of their vampire guests.
Damien offered details of the plan he proposed in regards to what Stoker told he and Kain during the interrogation.
Gabriel threw his hands up in frustration. “What you’re saying is you want to throw Kain to the vampires in the insane hopes he can do what now?”
Understanding the confusion, Kain offered the details in regards to the dark god’s involvement in the whole convoluted scheme.
“What does that mean, Damien? What exactly are you proposing?” Jill asked. Her tone matter-of-fact.
“I don’t expect everyone here to understand the minute details. Anthony’s
