said, her years of dealing with boardroom quarrels, and the Board’s conflicts with suppliers, was outraged by the antiquated notions his speech suggested.

“Miss Riddell,” Thornton said, “in the world where you work, that may be considered a sharp thing to think but here in the real world we value mutual relationships. We pay them for specific services it’s true and in return they provide wide loyalty and support when we need it.”

Pauline shrugged. “Do, or say, what you need to make it happen. If Mr. Ogilvie can’t accept a fair investigation into how the Will was switched, you may as well start packing now.”

Thornton nodded and left the room abruptly.

Pauline looked at Alan questioningly.

“He’ll call from the estate office,” Alan said. “He won’t be a moment.”

“I hope not. I want to get back to mother. She needs me more than any of you do.”

“Mother has a bad cold, Pauline. I and all the others here will lose our livelihoods and Mr. Thornton his whole estate.”

“Mother has flu,” Pauline said, “and people her age die from flu. You folks can find other investigators but you want me to do it for free and in my two weeks annual holiday instead of looking after mum and dad.”

Fortunately, before the argument grew worse, Frank Thornton returned. His expression was lighter than when he’d left.

“John Ogilvie would be happy to speak to you,” he said. “He’s frantic to find the original will and recover the damage his office appears to have done. He’ll be at his office for the rest of the day, if you will drop by.”

I’ve always loved mysteries, especially those involving Agatha Christie's Miss Marple. Perhaps because Miss Marple reminded me of my aunts when I was growing up. But Agatha Christie never told us much about Miss Marple's earlier life. When writing my own elderly super-sleuth series, I’m tracing her career from the start -- as you’ll see if you follow the Miss Riddell Cozy Mysteries over the coming years.

However, this is my Bio, not Miss Riddell’s, so here goes with all you need to know about me:

I’m a retired manager and a budding writer. When I’m not staring at the computer screen in the hope inspiration will strike, you’ll find me running, walking, and taking wildlife photographs around Whitby, Ontario, Canada. My series begins in northern England because that was my home growing up and England is also the home of so many great cozy mysteries. Stay with me though because the Miss Riddell stories will take us to many different places around the world.
