โBri, wait!โ
I hang up the phone and let out a deep breath. I knew I shouldn't have called her. I always end up feeling bad. I just feel so vulnerable and in need of . . .
Gavin.
But Gavin is leaving tomorrow. Iโll never see him again. That letter I wrote to him made sure of that. The thought hurts, but I need to get used to it.
My phone rings, and I almost hit the hang up button to ignore Mom when my finger freezes. Itโs Mindy. Talk about an angel.
โHey,โ I answer.
โHey, chica, whyโd you run off like that today?โ Mindy asks, her voice concerned. โI was almost free.โ
Please, girl, that line was as long as Gavinโs dick, I think inwardly.
โI got tired of waiting,โ I lie through my teeth. โPlus, Vandenburgh was around tooting his horn. I didnโt want to see him.โ
โWell, Iโm on break now so I have time to talk. What was on your mind?โ
Iโm tight-lipped. โNothing.โ
โYes, there was,โ Mindy says, her lie detector at full strength even though itโs the phone. Damn. โYou looked all sad and sullen.โ
I sigh. โIโve just been filling out these damn applications. Iโm tired and stressed, thatโs all.โ
Thereโs a pause on the other end of the line. โI know itโs something more than that. Come on, Bri.โ
I canโt bring myself to reply. It hurts too much.
โGavin came lookinโ for you,โ Mindy says suddenly.
The mention of his name catches my breath. โAnd?โ Iโm sitting on pins and needles waiting for her response.
โHe was all banged up,โ Mindy says, โand seemed pretty worried about you.โ
My heart skips a beat. โAll banged up? Whatโs that mean?โ
I can almost hear her nod through the phone. โYeah. He had a bandage wrapped around his head. Told me he fell and hit his head on set, but I already knew that before he told me. I was trying to tell you about it before you ran out on me.โ
Pain pierces my chest. Now I feel terrible for not stopping and listening to Mindy. At the time, I was too wrapped up in my emotions and annoyed by all the people.
Gavin must feel terrible that I didnโt check on him. I know I would.
โBut he seemed all right though?โ I ask worriedly.
Mindy laughs. โYeah, girl. I can tell youโre freaking out over it, but heโs fine.โ Mindy pauses. โHe was more concerned with seeing you, actually.โ
A feeling of relief washes over me. At least it was nothing serious. Iโm not sure what I wouldโve done if it were. โWorried about me?โ
I wonder if he found the note I left him before or after he talked to Mindy.
โYeah,โ Mindy replies. โI can tell he was really hurt. Probably because you hadnโt called to see how he was doing.โ She pauses for a moment and I hear her suck in a deep breath. โDonโt bite my head off, but will you please tell me what happened between you two? You both have been acting like lost puppies. Is it just because heโs leaving tomorrow?โ
Thatโs a major part of it.
I part my lips to reply but pause, a heavy feeling weighing down my chest. I want to tell her everything, but itโs hard because of the feelings it brings up.
Taking a deep breath, I tell her everythingโabout the sex, the dates, all of it.
Mindy pauses, processing it all. โI really think you should talk to him, Bri,โ Mindy says. โI donโt think he meant anything by leaving you that money. And if heโs leaving, donโt let him go like this. Youโll both regret it.โ
โWhatโs there to say?โ I ask. โItโs just going to make everything harder. This was all a waste of time.โ
โI donโt think it was,โ Mindy argues. โYou both had an experience and enjoyed each other. That counts for something.โ
โMaybe he would come visit from time to time?โ Mindy offers when I donโt reply. โOr maybe even stay?โ
I snort in disbelief. โI wonโt be some small-town booty call that he can stop in for. And he canโt stay. He has obligations.โ
โWell, with how he was acting the other day and the way he looked today when he came in to ask about you . . . I wouldnโt be so quick to judge.โ
I huff out a mirthless chuckle. โYouโre more delusional than I was when I first started having feelings for him.โ
โYou donโt have to believe it,โ Mindy tells me. โI just know what I saw.โ
I go silent, biting my lower lip in thought.
โI just want you to be happy, Bri,โ Mindy continues, her voice filled with concern.
Thatโs gonna be really fucking hard with Gavin gone.
I sigh. โI know, and I thank you, Mindy. But I need to go. Iโm emotionally exhausted.โ
Mindyโs voice is aching with emotion. โOkay. Please, just take care of yourself. I know you really liked Gavin, but you can't let this wind up ruining your life.โ
I hang up the phone feeling even worse than I felt getting off the phone with Mom.Gavin
โMr. Adams, what would you say about your first filming experience?โ asks the reporter. Heโs a tall, balding man dressed in a grey suit with a slight lisp. After five nonstop questions from him, itโs becoming irritating.
I put on a tight smile, doing my best to stay cool as repeated flashes go off in my face, the room filled with sounds of clicking cameras. โIt was amazing,โ I say with a cheer I donโt feel. โIt was a great experience.โ
โWe heard about your injury,โ says another reporter, a chubby man in jeans and a t-shirt, his Cowboys hat on backward. โAre you okay?โ
A stab of pain lances between my eyes, and itโs an effort to maintain my smile. โIโm fine,โ I reply, wiggling my eyebrows. โJust a little bump. Nothing a little Tylenol wonโt fix.โ
โMr. Adams,โ the first reporter says, โthere are rumors that you started up an off-screen romance with your co-star, Leslie Hart. Is there anything you want to say to that?โ
Now I have no problem faking my smile. The rumor
