apart had been a heavenly surprise.

He was all I could think about over those long weeks as spring tuned to early summer. The emails we’d exchanged hurting as much as they helped. It was good to know he was still interested, that he was even thinking about me, but in some ways, that only made the distance sharper.

I’d thought about sending him some pictures of my boobs and pussy, going so far as to take a few one night, but I just couldn’t pluck up the courage to send them. The stories of phones being hacked and pictures stolen had gotten to me. I was no Jennifer Lawrence, not by a long-shot, and couldn’t really think who would be interested in my body, except maybe Sean, but I still didn’t like the idea of my naked photos being out there for the world to see.

I might have grown up in the digital age, the internet a fact of life by the time I came along, but I was a very private person. Not really introverted, but I liked to keep myself to myself in terms of the more intimate details of my existence, not least because of a slight embarrassment about my family.

People treated me differently when they found out who my father was, and I wanted to be taken on my own merit. Coattail riders no longer interested me. The only way to really escape my famous dad and be seen as myself would be to change my last name, though I had yet to think of a way to do that without breaking my mother’s heart.

Sean and I may have skipped the online flirting, but we certainly made up for it at the party. He was back on the same continent as me, so there could well be chances for him to see me naked in real life. I was also pretty curious as to what was going on underneath his clothes. According to Maggie, Gavin was hung like a horse, and I could only assume Sean was similarly endowed. With any luck, I would find out soon enough.

I did my best to focus on work, but my mind continually drifted ahead to the date we had planned for that night. The tasks I was doing didn’t really help in terms of my concentration. Filing and photocopying taking on an almost Zen aspect. I often caught myself imagining the ocean while watching the ebb and flow of the light under the lid.

I’d worn my usual pantsuit, trying to give off a professional air, but under it, I wore my softest, sexiest black silk underwear.

As far as hectic days went, it was one of the worst. Nicole was working on an important case and had chosen me to assist on it. Partly to try and give me a chance to prove myself. She was one of the top junior partners at the firm, and if I did a good job for her, it could only help my reputation. I was only an assistant now, so I didn’t get a chance to work for the senior partners. Though, if things kept going how they were, that could soon change. I just couldn’t let my heart or my pussy distract me from my career.

“Hey.”

I nearly jumped out of my skin at the sudden and unexpected utterance. So caught up in filing, I hadn’t even heard Nicole come in.

“You okay?” she asked, giving me a peculiar look.

“Yes, absolutely. My mind was elsewhere.”

“I bet it was,” she said with a grin. “You about ready for lunch?”

“Good call.”

“Let’s go to my office, bring the Peterson file with you.”

The phrase ‘working lunch’ took on a whole new meeting as we sat with our brown bags amid a mountain of case law.

“How’s the family,” Nicole asked.

“You don’t want to know.”

“That bad, huh?”

“I don’t know if ‘bad’ is the right word. It’s too simple and neat.”

“Have you decided if you’re going to your parents’ garden party?” she asked. “I’ll definitely be there. It’ll be good for networking.”

I shuddered. “Not if I can help it. The Ashtons are going to be there. I know my dad is considered like royalty, but that doesn’t mean he can do arranged marriages.”

“That’s a bit harsh.”

“I suppose, but it is still a marriage of allegiance, which is deeply fucked up in the modern world. A marriage of convenience I can understand, but in that case, both partners consent and benefit.”

“So, if Harry Ashton were a foreigner in danger of deportation, you would want to marry him?”

“That’s a difficult question to answer. I would consider it depending on where and what he was going to be deported back to.”

“I get that. Still, decent men are hard to find, and we aren’t getting any younger.”

“No one is unless they’re Benjamin Button. It is a biological impossibility.”

“As will having kids be if we wait too long. Granted, you have more time than I do. The clock is tickin’, honey. Isn’t your mom missing you?”

“I don’t know, I haven’t asked.”

“Darcy, be serious. I know you have issues with your dad, but you shouldn’t punish your mom because you don’t want to live in his shadow. If anyone would understand that, it’s her. She’s been doing it for years.”

“Wow.”

“What?”

“Have you been taking guilt lessons from my mom?”

“Nope, I’m just a great lawyer. So, you’ll go to the garden party?”

“Not exactly with bells on, but yeah, I guess.”

The hour of liberation upon us, Nicole let me go a few minutes early, so I could get home to get ready before my date.

****

I was out of my work clothes in record time. I stood in front of my full-length mirror in nothing but my lingerie and studied my body. Not bad, really. Still young and fairly taut. A few blemishes
