I KNOW WHAT YOU DID.
It was still fresh, drops of white running down the glass.
The same glass where papers were once taped up by Voss that said โbring me Diana Weick,โ but now it was his turn, his message. The fresh glass tainted by someone who saw through him, who saw him for who he really was.
Idris was shocked, standing in front of the window, staring hard and long at the message, meticulously painted backwards so he could read it, clearly done with stencils for them to have finished it so quicklyโall for him.
But how could they know? No one knew about what heโd done. Nobody knew about the holes in his past, and the deals heโd made. They couldnโt know. Idris had accepted a long time ago that nobody could ever see through to what heโd become over the yearsโa hardened threat to everyone around him. His first thought was to call Diana. But she was done. He couldnโt have her involved, especially in this. Who else was there to report this to? Chief Harlow would do nothing. No. This was something Idris had to handle himself.
A glob of the white paint dripped down the window, connecting one of the Wโs with the Uโs and pooling along the outside edge of the freshly restored sill. The same sill that heโd pulled Diana up from only a few months ago.
He tried to swallow but it caught in his throat, till he almost choked on his own spit. He placed a hand against the window to steady himself. His palm left behind a mark of grease in between the painted letters.
Idris would scrape himself free of this. He would clean the paint tonight so no one would see his shame displayed in this way, so no one would doubt his loyalties because this wasnโt what this was about. MI6 was the most important thingโthe only thingโthat Idris had to hold on to right now. And he would not allow something as fickle and as subjective as his past to ruin it.
