βYou might need more than one cowboy, realistically,β he added.
βNothing against. Just donβt need one in my house.β
βI also suspect that isnβt true. Because Iβm thinking you probably need some things fixed in there.β
She looked stubborn for a moment. But under that he could seeβ¦she was wary and he wasnβt sure why. Heβd never given her a reason to be wary. βWell, maybe a few things. But I can call someone else out for that.β
βWhy?β he asked. βYouβve got me.β
Her eyes narrowed. βYou know how to repair things?β
βI sure as hell do.β
βWellβ¦ All right. Iβll let you come take a look then.β
βLead the way. Point out the mushy boards.β
He walked up the steps and through the front door, into the tiny, shabby entryway.
Cricket held her arms out. βWell, this is it.β She smiled. βWhat do you think? Just kidding. I donβt care.β
He looked around, turning in a circle. βItβsβ¦something, Cricket.β
To tell the truth, the little farmhouse wasnβt so bad. It was worn with years, and a bit shabby, but it was definitely repairable.
What he couldnβt imagine was a girl like Cricketβwhoβd grown up in a monstrosity of a mansion that was doing a poor imitation of a Tuscan villaβsettling into it.
βI thought so. Itβs a ranch. I feel likeβ¦ Thatβs what I feel like I want to do. Wineβs not really for me.β
βYeah, I noticed you were never all that into any of the Maxfield events.β
But there was a lot of ground between not wanting to be part of the winery and wanting to run a ranch. She might not know it yet, but he did.
Heβd spent years working the ranch at Cowboy Wines. Years. Pouring blood and sweat into his fatherβs land. His fatherβs legacy.
Until heβd found out the truth about Cash Cooper. And then heβd justβ¦
Heβd wanted his own.
Now, he still worked at the winery. He wouldnβt cause a rift. His mother wouldnβt have wanted that. Sheβd spent years working to make sure she kept the family together at the expense of her own happiness and he wouldnβt be the one to wreck that.
But he didnβt have to make his fatherβs life his own.
βNo, I was really not,β she said. βAnd this has always been kind of my dream. Soβ¦β
βWhy ranching?β
Her expression suddenly went shy, then sharp. βI donβt know. I feel like itβs in my blood. Which is weird, because my family doesnβt do it. Is that how you feel? Like ranching is in your blood?β
He shifted. Shrugged. βCanβt say as I know. Itβs just something I do. I canβt see doing any different.β
βYeah. Thatβs exactly it. Except, it wasnβt just right there for me, so I had to figure out what that meant. What it might mean for me that I dreamed about having my own little house out in the middle ofβ¦ Well, just like this. A field all around. I want horses.β
βHow are you going to make money? Are you breeding horses?β
βWellβ¦β
βCattle?β He didnβt wait for her to respond. βDairy or meat? Have you thought about dealing with slaughtering cows? With getting to the nearest USDA station and the cost of it all?β
βIβ¦β
βIf you decide to do horses are you going to keep studs or have sperm brought in?β
βWell,β she sputtered again.
βDoing produce? More of a farm? Have you thought about CBD? Thatβs a growing industry.β
βThe thing is,β she sputtered, her manner that of a wet hen. βI havenβt exactly decided. I donβt really know what I want to do with the place. But I kind of feel like until I get a bit moreβ¦ Until I get it into shape, Iβm not going to know.β
βI donβt know how thatβs going to work,β he said, like he was honestly doing her a favor. The girl had no idea what she was getting herself into. Sheβd be in water five feet high and rising. Before she knew it, sheβd be in over her pretty head.
This was practically a rescue mission.
Yeah, donβt go that far. Youβre being a dick. Own it.
Sure, heβd own it.
Like heβd own this ranch in the end.
But Cricket suffered from the overconfidence of the young and inexperienced. Jackson Cooper hadnβt been young or inexperienced for a long time. The problem with someone like Cricket was she was sure she knew exactly what was happening, exactly what she was doing, and she was also certain no one could possibly know better than her.
βI mean, Iβll be honest,β she said. βI donβt know if I have the fortitude to do beef. But it seems to me that the overhead with horses is really high.β
βHorses are expensive. Getting into good onesβ¦ Thatβs pricey. But it might be more what youβre looking for. Breeding good horses.β
βMaybe thatβs it.β That she seemed to be considering anything he said shocked him. βIβll think about it. Iβll spend some time reading.β She sighed. βFundamentally, I have time. This place is paid for. And I have some reserves.β
βFrom your dadβs estate?β
βPretty much. I sold my stake in the winery. I wanted out. I wanted toβ¦follow my own path, and I knew I wanted out. Soβ¦ I sold my stake. I got some cash.β
βAnd youβre using me for slave labor.β
βWell, since I had the opportunity, that just seems like good business. Why pay for something when you can get it for free?β
βLetβs start with the house,β he said, walking from the little sitting room into the kitchen. There were spiderwebs in the corner. βHave you cleaned?β
βA little,β she said.
He said nothing, he just kept on looking. At the dust, the peeling paint.
She wrinkled her nose. βOkay. Iβm not really used to doing any of my own cleaning. Iβm not opposed to it. Thereβs nothing wrong with being prepared. Itβs justβ¦ I havenβt really done it, so I donβt really think of everything. And I hate that, because I donβt feel like Iβm a spoiled rich girl, but I guess to an extent I am. I feel like I can do all these things, but I never have. Itβs
