“I’m just not sure that I’m ready mom, maybe another time.”
Nodding she said, “Okay, I understand. I wouldn’t want to pressure you into something you are not ready for quite yet.”
“Thanks.”
After a few moments she said, “Well, are you okay with me heading into town a little early before I have to report to work? I’ve got a couple of things I would like to do.”
“Are you just going to leave me here? Like this?” I asked as I took both my forefingers and pointed to myself and made an up and down sweeping motion.
She stood there looking at me for a few moments and then asked, “Why don’t you go with me then?”
After an extremely long pause I said, “I can’t because I don’t have any shoes to wear.”
A smile came to her face and she said, “You do too, because there’s the cutest pair of red slides that I have that will go absolutely perfect with that dress,” she said as she headed off to her closet.
Chapter 6
So, not only did mom fix me up with shoes but also loaned me a handbag, put a pair of magnetic diamond stud earrings on me, insisted I wear a necklace as well a variety of bracelets, and lastly thought that a little gold anklet would look nicely on me as well. I was definitely looking very feminine to say the least, but what can you say about that when you’ve just been turned into a girl?
After parking the car, mom and I begin walking down the sidewalk of Pecan Street, which was the major thoroughfare that ran through town, and it was also where a large number of specialty shops and restaurants were located. According to what I’d recently read, the area had become a weekend destination for many who lived in nearby cities over the past few years.
“Where are we heading first mom?”
Taking me by the arm she said, “You’ll see my dear.”
Dragging me into a nail salon, mom and I both had pedicures and manicures, which I was initially resistant to receiving, but after discovering that I could enjoy an alcoholic beverage while receiving them, I was convinced. Plus, since I was now a female, this qualified me to have my nails done.
Walking out of the salon after we were finished, I looked at my fingers and toes and said, “You know what mom? This actually looks very nice, I’m glad I let you talk me into having this done, and I love the color. What do you call this, it’s not clear, and it’s not white?”
“Sweetie that’s referred to as sheer.”
Holding my hand out in front of me and looking at my nails I said, “Cool.”
Looking at her watch, mom said, “We’ve just got time to get a bite to eat before I have to head to work. What would you like?”
Looking down the sidewalk I saw a sign and asked, “What about that place? Peggy’s Café.”
“I don’t know anything about the place but let’s be adventurous and try it out.”
Entering the restaurant, we could see that the establishment was moderately busy so we stood at the front and waited, following the instructions as indicated on the sign by the hostess stand. Finally, a young woman with her dark hair pulled back into a bun with a name badge that read Annabelle returned to the hostess stand, smiled at us and said, “I’m so sorry for the delay. How many?”
“Two please,” I said.
After examining her seating chart, she said, “Right this way please.”
Following her to a booth she waited on us to sit down and then gave us menus and said, “Your server will be right with you,” smiled and walked away.
The male inside me was clearly not dead because as she was walking away, I could not help but notice the tight black pants she was wearing and how perfect round and pronounced her rear end was.
“Finding anything interesting on the menu?” mom asked.
“Hmmm? No, nothing interesting on the menu mom.”
“I know what you’re interested in.”
“Mom, old habits die hard.”
“I hate to say it Dana, but girls may be a thing of the past for you.”
“Mom, are you kidding? People don’t live with relationship barriers like that anymore; people have relationships with those that they want to, not those who society tells them to.”
“Well excuse me, I stand corrected. What do I know, I’m just a mom?”
Thinking that I may have hit a nerve I said, “Look I apologize, you know there’s a lot going on with me right now. I hope you get that.”
Nodding mom said, “Dana I’m sorry, you’re right, you can’t just flick a switch and suddenly you’re attracted to ….”
Mom stopped talking as our server came up to the table and asked us, “Hi, welcome to Peggy’s, what would you like to drink?”
After getting our drinks we placed our food order, which came pretty quickly, and we wasted no time chowing down. Boy was I starved. However, since I was smaller than I’d been all my life I was not able to eat the amount of food that I would normally consume. Regularly I would be able to eat a double hamburger and fries, no problem, but I was clearly now only able to eat a single hamburger and a small order of fries. If nothing else I surmised that I would definitely be spending less on food.
Finishing up our meal, mom and I were sitting there and talking, when the hostess who seated us came back and began talking to us, “How was everything?”
“It was really good,” mom said.
Then Annabelle turned toward me, and I said, “Yes mine too.”
“Good. Hey, I know a lot of the locals and have never seen you before, passing through?”
“We just moved here a couple of days ago,” mom said.
“Really? What brought you here?”
“Work. I’m the new ER Director at Four
