its own. He saw Gabriel, Cade and Scott getting tossed like they were rag dolls.

A sense of darkness and impending doom brought about a subtle shiver in Kain’s spine. He could feel the being Damien described as he described it. It was unlike anything he’d ever felt.

“It almost seems obsessed with you, Kain. Through the whole fight, it constantly focuses on you. I don’t know why. I feel dazed as I look up but it’s the scream of pain I can hear that really terrifies me.” Damien stopped when Gabriel came into the room.

Chapter Twenty-Five

Gabriel threw his arm around Kain’s shoulders. “You two look like you’re attending a funeral. Come on, we’re about to go into Hell, might as well enjoy ourselves a bit.”

Kain sighed. “Gabriel, you have the worst timing.”

Damien scoffed, pissed.

“What’s his problem?” Gabriel asked.

“At the moment, dear friend, you are,” Kain replied, shoving Gabriel’s arm off.

Gabriel held up his hands. “As usual, you’re right, Kain. Though you still don’t know how to enjoy the finer things in life when they’re offered. Fine, I’ll settle on getting something for dinner.”

Kain finished preparing dinner, asking Damien if he might be willing to join him for another sparring lesson before eating. He needed to keep distracted since Tala hadn’t returned and he wanted to teach the younger lycan how to fight higher vampires since Lilith hadn’t provided a decent example.

Damien agreed and the two went to change into some workout shorts.

Zane met the two of them in the guest house gym Kain found while looking for the kitchen. Upon seeing him, Damien growled, obviously annoyed at the vampire’s presence. He asked Kain what Zane was doing there.

“You will need to know how a true vampire fights. Lilith and Stoker were nothing compared to what you could face when we go to Crimson. They are not like lycans. One hit in the right place can stop your heart.” Kain replied.

Kain heard the younger lycan swallow a knot in his throat. “Then how the hell do you fight one? I got lucky as fuck in that fight with Lilith.”

Kain positioned himself between Damien and Zane. “Calm yourself. Zane is different than the average vampire. Unlike many, he is a warrior. Read his movements and react accordingly.”

Zane fists raised in front of his face and chest. “Damien, I was in the Marines before being turned. Not many of the vampire’s today can say that. Anthony’s thugs are street brawlers who use more intimidation than actual skill. I’m the ideal opponent.”

With one look at Kain, Damien made his way into the ring. It soon became obvious that the younger lycan used more energy than needed.

Kain leaned against the glass of a nearby mirror to analyze each fall to the mat so he could build on the flaws and enhance Damien’s defensive skills.

Zane danced around Damien, taking him to the ground and blocking his punches and kicks with little effort. When it was obvious the younger lycan couldn’t take anymore, Kain ended the session.

“I’ve seen enough. Thank you, Zane.” Kain said, shaking the vampire’s hand.

Zane helped Damien to his feet, glaring at him. “Fight like that and you’re dead. I expected more from the legendary Kain’s student.”

Damien lowered his eyes, grinding his teeth. Kain watched the vampire depart the room.

“Fuck!” Damien slammed his fist in the nearest punching bag.

“Damien, calm yourself. I wanted to see how you would handle a one on one with a vampire.”

“Yeah, I fucked it up with Lilith too and almost got you killed. Then there’s this damn dream.” Damien slid down the mirrors to the floor.

Kain leaned against the mirrors next to his friend. “Finish your dream, then I will train you some more. It is best we are both prepared.”

A few hours after sparring with Damien, Kain decided he needed some solitude. His heart felt heavy with the revelation Damien’s dream gave him.

He made his way to the small garden behind the house under a tree to keep from getting wet.

“May I join you?” The velvet voice of Desdemona Cardoza filled his ears.

When he didn’t answer, she sat next to him on the marble bench and held an umbrella over his head. “You seem cold, Alexander. Something you would like to speak about?”

Kain shook his head. He still didn’t trust Desdemona after what she told him about his father.

“Your father would be proud of you. So many look up to you and seek your guidance. I wish my people had someone they could see that way.” Desdemona purred.

Kain lowered to rest his elbows on his thighs. “I am nothing like my father. He held a sense of honor more powerful than any lycan soldier. I have broken that honor, defiled it.”

Desdemona reached out to take his face. Her slender hands cold against his flesh. “You are more than Pentacost. Yes, you made some mistakes. We all have. Yet, you guide Damien and your pack, train them to stand strong in the face of the strongest foes. You should be proud.”

Confused, Kain looked into her ruby eyes to find her looking at him as a mother would her son. She caressed his face and leaned in to kiss his forehead.

“Be proud, Alexander Kain. Be strong and I know you will win this battle.” She rose to leave.

“Desdemona,” The vampiress turned to look at Kain. “Why did you look at me that way?”

The vampiress only smiled a saddened smile before leaving him to go back inside.

The strange encounter with Desdemona left Kain with more stress. His mind grew weary with everything he asked it to handle. A warm shower over his aching body started sounding really nice.

A sense of cold and darkness crept into the back of his mind indicating the arrival of the dark god. “I grow eager, Alexander. A day remains. Can you feel it? The finality of it all. So close, my forsaken one. So close.”

Kain refused to entertain him. Instead, he kept
