shaken.

“I’m okay, honey. The police are here.”

“What on Earth is going on?”

She sounded frantic, and Isaac helped the man to stand.

“This man was attempting a home invasion, ma’am. He assaulted your husband and forced his way inside. My partner and I have him in custody now, everything’s okay.”

“Oh, my God! Thank goodness you were here.”

They took a statement from the homeowners and left them with their card.

As they herded Burle Savage to the car, Isaac looked at him.

“Why’d you do this? What was your end game? Were you going to rob them? Kill them?”

Savage turned cold eyes on him.

“Just something to do. It’s fun. I like messing with them, making them beg, hearing them scream and cry. It’s especially fun if there’s a female at home.”

He grinned an evil grin that Isaac felt in his soul.

“I wanted to try it again with a rich person. Nicer house.”

“You’re a sick fuck, you know that?” Pete glared at him and practically shoved the man into the backseat. Savage only laughed, and Pete shut the door and turned to Isaac.

Isaac braced himself for what was coming.

“I know that I give you a hard time about this off-duty Psychic Batman thing we’ve been doing. But I gotta tell you, it feels good to be part of getting trash like this off the streets.”

“I agree.”

“That said… what the hell did I just see back there?”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean I… I thought…”

He paused and stared at him, like he couldn’t put it into words. Or didn’t want to.

“Thought what, Pete?”

Pete opened his mouth to say more, but only stared at him instead.

“Pete?”

“Nothing. Forget it.”

Isaac nodded, relieved.

“Let’s get him to the station. Robin.”

“Very funny.”

The next morning, Isaac woke early and showered. He dressed in a pair of black swim trunks and a long-sleeved Cleveland Cavaliers t-shirt. It was his day off and he had big plans.

When he came out of the bathroom, Sidney was still asleep. He smiled and carefully climbed back onto the bed.

Head propped up on his elbow he laid beside her and watched her sleeping.

She was so beautiful that sometimes he had to pinch himself.

What had he done in his crazy life to deserve someone like her? He would never understand it. What in the world was she even doing with him? How had he gotten so lucky?

He reached out and gently took one of her dark brown curls and twirled it around his finger.

Sidney stirred and her eyes fluttered open. When the sunlight streaming in through the window hit them, they sparkled like champaign-colored diamonds, enchanting him.

She smiled.

“That’s not allowed. Watching me sleep is against the rules, mister.”

“Oh, it is?”

“Yes.”

“Sorry. I’ve never heard about these rules you speak of. I didn’t get a copy of that document. And I’m certain I would never have agreed to something like that.”

“What are you doing?”

“Watching you sleep. I thought we’d just established that.”

Sidney giggled. “I mean, why are you watching me sleep?”

“Duh. Because it’s impossible not to. You’re too gorgeous. The question should be how can I look at anything else but you?”

Sidney rolled her pretty eyes.

“You have to get up and get showered,” Isaac said, still playing with her hair. “We’ve got a big day.”

“We do?”

“Yep.”

“Doing what?”

“Well, since it’s my day off, and since it was near impossible for us to get a day off together, I figured the occasion called for a special outing.”

“I agree, in theory. But what did you have in mind?”

“Well, I know how much you used to love going to the beach and being near the ocean back in California. You said the beach was your refuge back there. Your happy place. I also know that you’ve really missed not being able to do that since you’ve been in Ohio. And I want to show you that Lake Erie has it’s charms too. So, we’re spending the day at the beach.”

She smiled at him. “Really?”

“Really.”

“Which beach?”

“I was thinking we’d go to the beach at Lakeview Park.”

“I don’t think I’ve ever been to that one.”

“Perfect. That means we have to go. Get dressed. I’m making breakfast.”

“You’re cooking?”

She sounded shocked, and a little afraid. Isaac grinned.

“I can cook a few things without burning ’em.”

“Like what?”

“Like scrambled eggs and toast.”

He kissed her lips and hopped off the bed.

“Get up. Get dressed.”

“I’m getting, I’m getting.”

He left the room and ventured out to the kitchen.

Meow.

“Well, good morning to you too, Mr. Hitchcock. I can pour cat food. I know I can’t burn that. Come on.”

The kitten trotted along behind him and waited patiently while he filled up the dish with the dry cat food he preferred in the morning.

“There you go.”

The kitten dug in, and Isaac turned his attention to breakfast.

By the time Sidney came out wearing a pair of denim shorts and a lightweight sweatshirt, he’d already tossed out a bad batch of eggs and was cutting up some melon and strawberries.

“Okay, now before you say anything, we have toast with butter and jam, or that chocolate spread you like. And fruit. We’ve got strawberries and grapes and melon.”

“What happened to the eggs?”

“Well, they didn’t scramble up too well, but we don’t need ’em, really.”

“Did you burn them?”

“No! I didn’t burn them. I just couldn’t get all the shells out.”

Sidney giggled and helped him get their breakfast ready for the table.

He watched her top the toast with the chocolate spread and slices of strawberries and banana. Then she put the cantaloupe and grapes into two bowls and added some fresh pineapple chunks.

“Breakfast is served.”

“How’d you do that?”

“You did all the prep work. I just helped.”

“You salvaged the mess I was making.”

“That’s my job, baby.”

He laughed at that. They sat and ate their breakfast in silence for a few moments. Then he looked her over.

“You’re wearing that to the beach?”

“Yeah.” She looked down at her attire. “Is something wrong with it?”

“Well, no. I just thought you’d wear a bathing suit, that’s all.”

Sidney lifted her sweatshirt all the way up over her boobs and revealed a blue and white stripped bikini top.

“Did you
