Sauvignon Blanc, she relaxed. Colt reached across the table and took her hand in his. “I’m so glad you agreed to come out with me tonight.”

“Me too.” Caitlyn smiled and glanced around the elegant dining room of the new golf club’s restaurant. Shades of dark blue, cherry wood, and brushed nickel accents graced the rich room. They draped the dinner tables in white linen, and candles winked through decorative lanterns at their centers. Caitlyn took it all in before she returned her gaze to Colt. “Things have changed between us over the past weeks, haven’t they?”

The green in his eyes darkened, and his mouth curled up on one side. He leaned forward, his tone intense. “Does that mean you’ve finally forgiven me?”

Caitlyn rubbed her thumb across his knuckles. “You were just a kid.” She smiled playfully. “But you’ve grown up nicely. I forgive you for the mistakes you made after graduation, Colt.” She dropped her gaze to their hands, and a gentle laugh softened her words. “Although, I’m not sure how I feel about the fact that you actually thought I could be a murderer.” She widened her smile. When spoken aloud, the thought still jabbed at her heart, but she wanted to let her grudges go. “Even so, I think maybe it’s time for us to move forward.”

The concern in Colt’s eyes softened, and the skin at their corners crinkled. “You don’t know how happy that makes me.” He lifted her hand to his mouth and kissed it before raising his wineglass. “Here’s to our future.” They tapped their glasses in cheers and sipped. “And another toast, to working together.” They clinked their goblets again.

Caitlyn smiled. “That reminds me—I forgot to tell you I registered for the Law Enforcement Academy. When I graduate, in about six months, I’ll be a qualified law enforcement officer, and as soon as Renegade completes his training, so will he.”

“That’s great, Catie. By the time I’m officially elected as Sheriff, you will both be fully qualified to be my deputies.” His smile brightened the handsome face above his square jaw, and the golden flecks in his eyes glowed.

“Not so fast, Colt.” She enjoyed watching the light play in his eyes and knew what she was about to say would dim it.

He raised his eyebrows in question. “Don’t you want to work in Moose Creek?”

“Yes, I do. But you know we can’t be anything more than friends if we work together.”

As if she’d flipped a switch, the light was gone. “Then maybe you could get a job in Sundance or somewhere?”

“Don’t you want to work with me?”

“Yeah, but…” he searched her eyes. “I was hoping for more.”

“I don’t want to move too fast. I forgive you, Colt, but I don’t want to risk getting hurt again. Can’t we just be friends and co-workers for a while? Take our time?”

A furrow formed between his brows, and Caitlyn hated that she put the disappointment in his eyes. “Besides, who knows? Maybe someday, I’ll be the sheriff and you’ll have to work in another town.” She teased, hoping to brighten his mood.

He gazed at her, considering her words, then finally he gave her that deliciously wicked grin that made her want to jump in his lap. “I guess we’ll just have to see.”
