alpha sent me. I need you to come with me, now. Something happened while Jill was hunting.”

“Is she hurt?” Damien replied, inviting Chase in so he could get his boots and jacket.

“No but, she’s not okay either. Hurry.”

Damien grabbed his keys, wallet and phone. “Dad, I’m going out. See you later.”

“Okay, be careful!”

Damien followed Chase to the wood’s edge, parking his motorcycle next to Holt’s truck before hitching a ride on the wolf to Holt’s camp.

Kain met him at the entrance. “I am glad you’re here. She needs to see you.”

“Where is she?” Damien replied, nervous.

Kain nodded his head towards the direction of the tent belonging to Leah, Holt’s mate.

Leah hugged Damien upon seeing him. “Damien, thank Luna. She’s in my tent, it was awful. I’ve never seen her so upset.”

Damien walked through the flap to find Jill kneeling facing the wall. “Jill? Are you okay?”

Jill rose slowly from where she was kneeling, turning around to reveal a small bundle of blankets in her arms.

Damien felt his heart shatter. The blankets were in the shape of a small body.

“This is what they do. They kill without remorse. I rescued her from werewolves, nursed her wounded leg and thought she would be okay. She passed away just as you walked up.” Jill choked back on the emotions in her heart. The hope dwindled in her eyes as she held the pup close before putting it down on the floor.

When Jill rose back up, Damien wrapped his arms around her, pulling her into him and petting her hair. He rested his finger under her chin, guiding her eyes to meet his own.

“I'm so sorry, Jill.” Pain filled his eyes as he lowered his lips to hers, tasting the cold of the night along with the sorrow flooding her heart.

Jill held onto his jacket so tightly, she thought she would rip it. “Damien, I’m not sure my heart can take much more. I’m losing hope.”

“Jill, you have to hope. It’s all that’s left. My mom used to say when you’ve hit rock bottom there’s only one way to go. I would say we’re at the bottom, wouldn’t you? Lilith won’t get away with this. I won’t let her.” Damien answered, determined to make Lilith pay for what she’d done.

Jill smiled, kissing him. “I have something I want to show you. Come with me.” Jill took his hand, leading him through the encampment. A large tent on the outer perimeter had been put up just so they had a place to stay when they visited.

The inside of the tent was more ornate than the others, almost as if it were built as a small temple to honor a deity. The carpets a mix of rich royal blues and purples with golden hems and tassels.

The bed was more like something one would see in a hotel. It was much larger with silk sheets and a comforter that was deep red. The pillows adorned with silken cases.

“Wow, Jill. Why all the over the top décor?” Damien asked, a bit overwhelmed.

Jill zipped the door closed and began to undress. “This is from Yuna and Galeck. They insisted the keeper of the Purifier’s soul should be treated as someone next to royalty.”

“I'm not sure I'm okay with this. I don't want any special treatment. I'm not even sure what a Purifier is or what I'm supposed to do as one.” Damien replied, feeling strange for being presented with such elaborate gifts.

“Yuna is very traditional. She insisted on doing this for Gabriel too but he refused.”

“Gabriel? Why him?” Damien asked, curious.

Jill looked away, cursing herself for saying what she did. “He’ll tell you when he’s ready. He doesn’t really like to talk about it.”

Damien was curious but he wasn’t going to pry. He and Gabriel weren’t exactly on the best grounds for friendship.

“Jill, what happened? You left me a note to tell me you went hunting and then Chase shows up at my door. I can only imagine it has something to do with the pup.”

“Kain assigned Chase as your night watch last night. You’ve had a lycan on you since the incident with Lilith. As for the pup, werewolves attacked her mother without any reason. There were four of them. She never had a chance. I managed to kill them and thought the pup would be okay but she died. I’m pretty sure it was from a broken heart.” Jill ran her thumb over her eyes to hide her tears.

“Anyway, I’m glad you came, Damien. I wasn’t doing so well this morning. I nearly called you but I didn’t want to wake you. Is your hip okay? I know I was a little rough.”

“It’s…fine.” Damien lied to avoid worrying Jill since she’d already had so much on her plate. “Rob called me this morning.”

“What’d he say?”

“Chelsea dropped by his house again last night. Some of the things she said. I just can’t believe she would do this. I never would have seen this coming.” Damien dropped his head in his hand in disbelief, his other one propped on his hip.

“Damien, that’s what happens. Sometimes the change brings out the worst in people. It’s one reason why we never turn anyone unless we know for certain their souls are pure. Most vampires are less careful. They turn people on a whim. I did tell you, didn’t I? This life, this world. It’s not for the faint of heart.” Jill replied, wrapping her arms around Damien’s waist, her cheek rested on his back against his jacket.

Damien took Jill’s hands in his. The worry for his father and Rob’s safety grew stronger as he thought about Chelsea.

If the vampires had gotten to Chelsea so easily without anyone knowing then what could stop them from getting to his dad or Rob?

Everything began spinning out of
