“Oh, blast, I’m not good at this. I slipped over to see
Luty and tell ‘er ‘ow things turned out. She made me promise, Mrs. Jeffries.”
“I know,” Mrs. Jeffries smiled. “How is she feeling?”
“She’s right as rain,” he said, relieved that the housekeeper wasn’t angry. “I’m sorry. I didn’t mean to deceive anyone, but it meant so much to ‘er, and I didn’t want you
lot gettin’ angry at me ‘cause we agreed to keep ‘er out of it.
She’s old, Mrs. Jeffries. She told me she might not ‘ave many
cases left, and she didn’t want to miss even one. She did all
her investigatin’ right from ‘er room.”
“Wiggins, it’s all right. I’m not angry, and I won’t tell
the others. Now get on up to bed and get some sleep. Tomorrow is Christmas Eve, and we’ve much to do.”
“Ta, Mrs. Jeffries.” He started for the back stairs. “Uh,
Mrs. Jeffries there’s just one more thing I’ve got to ask you.”
“What is it?”
“Well, it’s about that cat. Even with the servants feedin’
‘im, I think ‘is days at the Braxton house are numbered.”
“You’re not suggesting what I think you’re suggesting?”
She couldn’t believe her ears.
“I think we ought to adopt ‘im, Mrs. Jeffries. ‘E can’t be
as bad as they say, and I’m sure ‘im and Fred would get
along real good.”
