The pounding had stopped and only silence was left behind. I was about to collapse to my knees in relief when the pressure returned once more. I almost cried out in frustration, but the pressure was brief, then it broke through with two small beats. Two syllables.
โSte-phen.โ And then, โHelp-me.โ
I sat up in bed panting, cold sweat causing my T-shirt to cling to my skin.
Ste-phen.
Ste-phen.
Ste-phen.
Each syllable a hammer blow.
The name echoed inside my head, spoken in Blakeโs voice. I shook my head in denial.
โNo, no, no!โ
Itโd been a nightmare, a figment of my messed up dreams. It wasnโt a memory. True, Iโd felt that same awful pressure while at the warehouse when I stood over Blake, but that had been it. I hadnโt heard his voice in my mind, and he hadnโt been calling for Stephenโs help because that would mean... that would mean...
No!
Stephen couldnโt be the one responsible for what was happening in the city. And Blake couldnโt have spoken inside my head because he wasnโt an alpha.
Unless...
My heart thundered as a possible explanation occurred to me. If Iโd heard Blakeโs cry for help, that had to mean that... that I was an alpha.
No.
It couldnโt be. It just couldnโt be.
My imagination was out of control, jumping to conclusions. The dream had been simply that, a dream, not a revelation of something Iโd been too inexperienced to recognize as an alpha ability. Right? Right?!
I jumped out of bed and grabbed my Camaroโs keys. There was only one person who could help me. I had to see Eric Cross right away.
