to stay away from scandals.

All the traits that I liked in men were evidently not in Felix. But as he stared down at me, I started settling into the thought that I was just going to be another one of his victims. I honestly expected to be matched with one of the other senior players because I didnโ€™t expect Felix to have noticed me.

His success on the field made him a very cocky guy, and he walked with a certain air that made him think he could fuck any girl he wanted. Well, he was going to be in for a surprise after fixing himself up with me.

I wouldnโ€™t fall for him. I wouldnโ€™t sleep with him. He wasnโ€™t serious enough for me. I was merely not in the mood for prolonged games with overconfident men who thought they could have anything they wanted.

With a big smile on his face, Felix walked away.

I turned to Brianna. โ€œI donโ€™t think Iโ€™m even going to talk to him at the dinner.โ€

She blinked at me. โ€œWhat? Felix is fine. Heโ€™s one of the hottest players on the team right now.โ€

โ€œI know that. But Iโ€™ve just sworn off relationships for good.โ€

โ€œWhat brought that on?โ€

โ€œFelix is just another Drake,โ€ I argued. โ€œHeโ€™s going to spend the whole night trying to get into my pants.โ€

Drake was embarrassing for me because he dumped me right after having sex with me. He just simply walked away and acted as though I didnโ€™t exist.

In the beginning, it had been romantic. We went out for dinners, visited galleries together, and attended some fancy parties organized by some of his teammates. He was very kind and sensitive, and I did enjoy his company.

However, once we spent a night together, everything about him changed. He became as cold as the weather, and he didnโ€™t even acknowledge me in the slightest. I was stunned, considering I thought we had a nice time together.

When I saw him at practice a couple of days after that, he acted as though he didnโ€™t even know me. No greeting, no wave of the hand. It was as though I wasnโ€™t there. I had to spend a couple of minutes in the bathroom crying my eyes out.

Since that incident with Drake, I vowed never to get into such a situation again. He made me feel as though I was his dirty little secret despite everything going well between us. I was never going to fall for such a player again.

โ€œWell, Iโ€™m equally annoyed with this match up thing,โ€ said Brianna, โ€œIโ€™m not looking forward to this dinner.โ€

Later that day, we went for a manicure and pedicure down the street. We wanted to try and push the forced dinner dates out of our heads. There was no point sulking about it the whole day.

However, I simply couldnโ€™t get the image of Felix out of my mind. The cocky way in which he grinned at me, his overconfident look. It irritated me to think that I would have to spend an entire dinner seated with him and having to listen to his mindless chatter.

I knew that the coaches had the teamโ€™s best interests at heart by setting up this Valentineโ€™s event. Still, it would have been better if everybody got to select their own matches.

And what had inspired Coach Kramer to put Felix in charge of setting this up?

He barely knew all the cheerleaders. He was not the right person for the job. Still, I wondered whether it would be any different for me had I gotten set up with anybody else other than Felix.

I knew Brianna would be much happier if she had gotten Steve. She had her eye on him for a while now, and I was hoping that something could develop between the two of them. But there was no way to help. All I could do was watch from a distance.

We were both just doomed. It wasnโ€™t going to be possible for me to get out of this thing. I would just have to tolerate a horrible, early Valentineโ€™s Day date.

Chapter Five โ€“ Mandy

February 1st

Love was in the air.

Unfortunately for me, I was indifferent.

I was seated across from Felix, trying to enjoy dinner with him and listening to his stories. He was actually an exciting narrator, particularly of events directly related to him. He was very good at giving himself a larger-than-life description.

We were seated in a large ballroom that the team had rented out specifically for the matchmaking dinner. The team coaches and their families were present, and so was almost anybody who had an association with the club.

Some of the matches that Felix made seemed to be working out fine. Some couples genuinely enjoyed their dinners, swirling at their wine glasses and enjoying conversations with each other.

Then, there were the others, such as myself, struggling to keep up with Felixโ€™s conversation. Even though he had interesting stories, I was still looking forward to the end of the night.

However, as my eyes swept across the ballroom, I noticed something peculiar that actually put a smile on my face. Drake was seated with Jane, one of the bitchiest girls on the cheerleading squad. It was a sight to behold.

I interrupted one of Felixโ€™s stories with a question. โ€œDid you match those two? Thatโ€™s really cruel of you,โ€ I laughed.

Felix turned to where I was pointing and shrugged. โ€œWhat of it?โ€

โ€œYou must really hate her? Jane?โ€

โ€œI donโ€™t know what you mean,โ€ he said, his curiosity growing.

I explained to him that I once went out with Drake, and things did not go very well since he was the love them and leave them type. I also mentioned the fact that Jane was not the best of people, and matching the two of them was a weird sense of justice in my
