to proceed with the enchantment now, place the weapon you wish to enchant on top of the scroll.

This process is irreversible.

I slowly placed the swords on top of the scroll and waited, but nothing happened. I scanned the weapons but saw no difference in them and the scroll was unchanged.

"I'm not sure if it's--" I managed to say before a small flash, originating from the center of the scroll, wrapped around the swords and settled in them.

The scroll was now nothing but empty yellowish papyrus, the sword art completely missing. The swords had no glow on them yet. but that was to be expected. From what I knew, only weapons and armors enchanted above the safe threshold would have a glow. However, if the enchantment had worked, the stats of the weapons should have changed.

I brought up their stats screen, and while the description was the same, the stats had indeed increased.

"That's it!" I exclaimed. "It worked. My swords are +1 now."

"Well, make them +3 then," Louie said, sharing my excitement.

Enchanting weapons had always been a thrill for me. The notion that your weapons looked the same but packed more of a punch, being able to take down foes faster, was one of the most exciting things in MMORPGs. Of course, the biggest thrill was enchanting your weapon when it wasn't safe to do so anymore, waiting for the animation to end before you were met with either a stronger version of your weapon or nothing at all. Well, nothing but a feeling of immense regret.

That wouldn't be the case now though. This wasn't a game, and we couldn't take any chances, especially with borrowed money. Thus, I placed the second scroll under the swords and then the third, enchanting them to the maximum safe level.

Name: Runic Longswords of Whispering and Screaming +3

Type: Dual Swords

Rarity: D Grade

Physical Attack: 122

Magic Attack: 60

Special Ability: -

Attack Speed: Normal

Durability: 12200/12200

Weight: 1940st.

Description: These swords are perfectly balanced, despite the very different runes carved down the sides of their blades. Each sword has a unique ability, the use of which will activate the runes and cause them to glow. One of the swords will scream a single word commanded by the wielder, while the other will whisper a word directly in their enemy's ear.

"Your turn now, buddy," I said and put Louie's book on top of the final weapon enchantment scroll.

"Let me do it," he said, and took control of the enchanting process.

Pretty soon, the same flash that had enveloped my swords three times so far, covered Louie's spellbook before the sword art disappeared on the scroll underneath it.

Name: Levitating Spellbook of Quick Recalling +1

Type: Big Blunt - Staff

Rarity: D Grade

Physical Attack: 94

Magic Attack: 75

Special Ability: -

Attack Speed: Fast

Durability : 9700/9700

Weight: 840st.

Description : This thick, leather-bound tome can be soul-bound to its wielder. Once it is bound, it will float around its owner when equipped, mentally following their commands and flipping the pages to their desired spell. This is a very popular weapon of choice for spellcasters who lack opposable thumbs.

"That is seriously cool," he said, having scanned the item at the same time I did.

"Cooler than bacon?" I asked slyly.

"Okay, let's not get too crazy now," he replied and I saw his eyes momentarily lose focus.

"Are you soul-binding your weapon?" I asked, but he didn't need to reply.

The book's pages suddenly flipped, slowly at first but then alarmingly faster before the whole thing took flight and then settled just above Louie's head.

"It's amazing how easy it is to control," he said and the book moved in front of his eyes and then to the side. "And that's without the need to maintain a spell. Such an amazing practical use of permanent spell implementation!"

"I'm glad you like it, buddy," I said and rubbed him behind his ears, the book smoothly getting out of the way of my hand. "Now let's do your armor, okay?"

Louie nodded and telekinetically placed his one-piece armor, which looked like a regular dog's jumpsuit, on the table in front of me. One by one, I placed the armor enchantment scrolls underneath it and enchanted it up to +4.

Name: Rags of the Capricorn Order +4

Type: Full-Body Armor (Robe)

Rarity: D Grade

Physical Defense: 109

MP Increment: 320

Durability : 5700/5700

Weight: 2580st.

Description : The Capricorn Order was a group of monks who lived four thousand years ago and were devoted to bringing their deity, the Capricorn, to the prime material plane. The whole Order mysteriously disappeared on the same day, leaving their numerous monasteries around the world completely empty. After multiple raids and the pillaging of the Order's monasteries, the diaries of many monks were brought to light, revealing that the day the Order disappeared, a powerful summoning ritual was supposed to have taken place. The robe designs of these monks have since been replicated, including the hand-stitched goat on the chest.

"That looks good but perhaps we should enchant your armor too now," Louie said, once we were done with his robes. "We've still got seven scrolls left."

"No, Louie," I said and pretended to pout at him. "We agreed we'd do yours only at the moment."

And so I went on to enchant his helmet and gloves to +3 and his boots to +1. I wished there were enough scrolls available to enchant everything he was wearing to +3, but unfortunately any additional ones I had found would have taken a lot longer to be delivered. We couldn't wait any longer. Not while Leo was in danger. This would have to do.

"Okay, let's equip everything and check our stats again," I said, and started donning my armor and accessories.

Louie was much faster than me, since his control over his telekinetic skill had significantly improved and he had a lot fewer and less intricate pieces to wear. I was still struggling with my boots when he finished equipping his gear and cast his buffs on both of us.

"We'll
