โWould you shut up about how awesome the new iPhone is? I had Saraโs number in my old phone.โ
โHeard you were letting her go.โ
โI changed my mind. Thatโs where I was headedโto the airport to stop her.โ
โSo sheโs the one?โ
โYeah, sheโs it for me, Cole. Never felt like this about any other woman. She was it for me in high school. I asked her to stay then, but she left anyway. I know now that was a selfish thing for me to do. It was best for her to leave back then. It was the right move for her future. I had to let her go.โ
โAnd now? Did you tell her how you feel before she left?โ
โNot exactly.โ
โWhy not?โ
โI was fucking scaredโscared Iโd lay my heart out, and sheโd leave again anyway.โ
โSo, you didnโt say shit, and surprise, she got on the plane.โ
โDonโt fucking twist the knife, VP.โ
He rocks back on his heels, his arms folded. โMaybe you deserve it, beinโ a chickenshit and all.โ
I huff out a breath and drop my head to stare at the ceiling. โMaybe so.โ
โSo, now are you gonna man up, and tell her how you feel?โ
โIf sheโll listen.โ
โWhat are you gonna say?โ
โI donโt know. Tell her I love her. Tell her Iโm an idiot for not begging her to stay. Ask her to come back.โ
โThink sheโll listen?โ
โI donโt know.โ
โLetโs find out.โ

I lift my head, frowning. โWhat?โ Cole is moving toward the door. โWhere are you goinโ?โ
He opens it. โYou hear all that?โ
I donโt hear a reply but he jerks his head, motioning someone inside, and I wonder if my brothers are all out in the hall, laughing their asses off at me. Someone ducks under his arm, and Sara steps into the room. My heart skips a beat. I know it does, because the monitor beeps, its little line jumping and then settling back into rhythm.
My mouth falls open as I stare at her, hardly believing what Iโm seeing. Her eyes are glazed with unshed tears, but sheโs smiling.
โWhat are you doing here?โ I ask.
Cole steps out the door, giving us some privacy.
Sara moves toward the bed and smiles down at me.
โYou didnโt get on the plane?โ I ask like an idiot because sheโs standing right in front of me.
She shakes her head. โNo.โ
โWhy not?โ
โBecause, you big dope, I belong here with you.โ Her eyes move over my injuries. โYou could have been killed.โ
โIโm okay. Iโve wrecked before.โ
โIโve been sick with worry.โ
โAbout me?โ
โYes, about you, silly. I love you, Irish, but if you ever drink and ride again, weโre done.โ
โDone? We havenโt even gotten started.โ Right now Iโd agree to any terms she throws down. Hell, Iโd give up drinking altogether.
โI donโt ever want to see you like this again, all broken, and . . .โ
Her voice trails off with a sob.
โBaby girl, donโt cry. Iโm okay.โ
โYour poor leg. You almost bled to death in the street.โ
I reach up with my good hand and cup her face, tubes dangling. โI promise you, Iโll be okay. Iโm just happy youโre here. Tell me youโre staying for good. I donโt want to think about a future without you in it.โ
โIโm staying.โ
โWhat about your job?โ
โI told Ethan he could keep the designs Iโve already finished, and I told him I had a family emergency and wouldnโt be back. My team is capable of finishing the picture, if not, I really donโt care.โ
โBut, babe, you love designing.โ
โThereโs an opening at the San Francisco Opera House for a resident designer. They offered it to me last week. I told them Iโd give them an answer this week. So, if you want me to stay, Iโll call and take it.โ
โI want you, girl. I love you, Sara. Youโre my heart and soul. My everything.โ
I pull her down until her mouth meets mine. Her lips are soft, but she pulls back.
โI donโt want to hurt you.โ
I guide her back again. โDonโt make me use my bad arm.โ
She grins and dips her mouth to mine, then stares into my eyes. โI love you, Irish. I always have.โ
โNot lettinโ you go again, so you better mean forever this time.โ
โForever, baby, you and me.โ
I grin. โIf Iโd have known all it took was wrecking my bike to get you to stay, Iโd have done it so much sooner.โ
She slugs my good arm. โDonโt even think about ever wrecking again, mister, or this deal is off.โ
โThat what we have, Saraโis this a deal?โ
โWe always had a deal. We were destined to be together.โ
I chuckle. โJust took us a helluva long time to get here, woman.โ
โIt may have been the roundabout way, but maybe we needed to grow into the people we are, to be ready to have this life together.โ
โIโm gonna make it a good life for us, baby. I promise. Gonna do everything in my power to make you happy.โ
She taps my nose. โGonna hold you to that promise.โ
โGood thing Iโve got a record of keepinโ my promises to you.โ
โThat you do, sweetheart.โ
Epilogue

Sunrise, One year later
We stand at an overlook on the coast near the arches. Iโm holding Saraโs hands and sheโs facing me. Sheโs dressed in a beautiful flowing gown that flutters in the breeze, little flowers woven into her hair.
Our eyes are locked on each other, and I canโt help but grin as I look at her. It seems like itโs taken forever for us to get here. But through months of rehabilitation when I cursed, and bitched, and swore it wasnโt worth the pain, she stood by me.
Iโm standing on my own two feet and finally walking with barely a limp.
I squeeze her hand and she winks at me.
The minister finally gets to the good part.
โI now pronounce you husband and wife. You, sir, may kiss your bride.โ
I pull her to me and take her face
