Wade clears his throat, walking back to the columbarium. βEr, yeah. I think Iβve seen him around town before.β
Following behind him, my heart clenches at the lie. Maybe if I come clean, heβll feel open enough to do it, too.
βSo, I have something to tell youβ¦β I say.
Wade runs his hand along the backside of his neck and turns to look at me. βOkay, what is it?β
βThe other day, when you called me about your grandpaβ¦something happened.β I search his eyes, hoping to see some glint of emotion, maybe guilt, for having just lied. But all thatβs reflected back at me is curiosity. I look down at my shoes and clear my throat. βI, uhβI think Iβve finally gotten a good grip on my powers.β
Wadeβs eyes widen and he takes a step closer. βThatβs fantastic, Autumn. Why didnβt you tell me sooner? This would have been good newsβ¦β
I shake my head. βNot exactly. I guess I can say Iβd rather I didnβt have to practice the way I did.β
βWhat do you mean?β he says, narrowing his gaze and taking a seat on the granite bench. He pats the spot beside him and I sit down.
βWell, Colton and Cat were in an accidentβ¦something ran out in front of them. They swerved to miss andβ¦β I turn to face the columbarium and my words drift off.
βAnd?β he presses.
I press my palms together and slide them between my knees. βCat died.β
βWhat?β Wade says, indignantly. βAnd you didnβt tell me? This whole time you were here whenββ
I wave a hand. βSheβs fine.β
βJesus Christβsay that part first, would you?β he says, clutching at his chest and walking away. I follow behind him, reaching for his arm and spinning him around.
βThereβs more to it, though,β I whisper, biting on the side of my cheek. βIβm the one who brought her back.β
Wadeβs inhale is sharp and I see the recognition in his eyes. Recognition he was hoping wasnβt true. βLike, you gave her CPR?β
I press my lips tight and raise an eyebrow. βYou know thatβs not what I meant.β
Wade shakes his head. βBut youβ¦you can see the ghosts. Abigailββ
I shrug. βI know. For some reason, I can do both. I donβt understand how it all works. I just know Catβs alive because of what I did.β
Wadeβs hands fly to his head and he rakes his fingertips through his hair. βThis isβbad. Really bad.β
βBad? I thought you were excited for me to figure out my powers,β I say, trying to coax him along.
His eyes flit back to me and he nods. βYouβre right. It is. Totally. I just meanβ¦β His eyebrows tug in and the lines across his jaw tighten. βHow horrible for Cat. And you. That must have been terrifying.β
I stare at him, shocked that when faced with the truth, he still isnβt willing to open up fully to me.
My heart clenches and my gaze falls to the ground. Leaves billow past in colors of brown, gold, and red, and I canβt help but wish things were as simple as their lifespans. Leaves bud, grow, and eventually wither and die. They fall to the ground without holding on to what once was. Instead, they justβ¦let go.
Nodding, I finally say, βYeah, it was pretty bad. I canβt say Iβm in any hurry to use that power again. You know?β
Taking a deep breath, I return my gaze to him. If he can keep secrets of his own, maybe I should keep a few of my own. Like Coltonβs kissβ¦
Wade steps forward, wrapping his arms around me. Melting into his embrace I close my eyes.
βIf thereβs anything I can do, let me know,β he whispers, stroking my hair.
βThereβs nothing to do. Cat will healβ¦β I say. βShe is healing. In fact, everyoneβs surprised at how fast sheβs getting better.β
Wade doesnβt say anything at first and when I look up, his facial expression is contorted with worry.
βWhat is it? Whatβs wrong?β I say.
Wade shakes his head and forces a smile. βItβs nothing.β
βAre you sure, because it kinda seems like something.β
βIβm justβworried for you is all. Necromancy is a big deal. Itβs not a power thatβs easy to shoulder,β he says.
βI donβt have to do it alone. I have you,β I say, watching his every movement.
Holding still at first, he finally nods. βYou do,β he whispers.
βThen thatβs all that matters. Come on, letβs go for a drive. Weβve been trapped in this town for the past few days. I think we need some time away from all of this. Letβs go back to Windhaven for the night. Iβm sure the estate stuff can wait until another day,β I say, dropping my arms so I can slide a hand into his.
βI like the sound of that,β he says, trying to force his lips into a smile.
βGood, because you donβt get a choice,β I say, turning on my heel and leading the way back to Blue.
We both climb into our seats, but Wade stares at the columbarium in silence.
βDo you need more time?β I ask, my hand poised on the keys in the ignition.
He shakes his head. βNo, Iβm good. Thereβs nothing left for me here.β
My heart breaks a little for him, knowing that whatever is going on must be tearing him up inside. I just wish heβd let me inβ¦
Slipping the car into drive, I pull out of the cemetery and out onto the road. I turn on some music and lower the windows to allow the scent of fall to wash away the lily fragrance still lingering in the cab of my vehicle.
We drive in silence, each of us wrapped up in our own thoughts and worries. If thereβs one thing Iβve learned in all of this, itβs that we should hold tight to those we loveβ¦not push them further away. You never know when your time together could be cut short.
The farther north we drive, many of the trees still hold tight to their leaves. Itβs like a resurrection
