“And what truth is that? The one you see in your head because you can’t accept reality?”
She crossed her arms over her chest. It was really annoying that even with heels on she towered over me. “You’re the one who’s living in a fantasy world.”
“Is this about your vision again?” I tried to step around her. She moved to block me. “How about we make a deal? When the time comes, I’ll make your death quick and merciful.”
I was so done trying to convince people that I wasn’t going to turn bad. I was done thinking about myself that way.
This time, she smiled. “You just have no idea, do you?”
“I know that the people in my life worth caring about don’t believe that I’m going to go off the deep end. That’s all the idea I need.”
She placed a hand on her hip. “If that’s what they really think then why are they still keeping secrets from you?”
This time I moved around her for real. I didn’t need to stand here listening to this. She was a liar and a bully. She’d say anything to upset me.
“Why don’t you ask Kai what’s happening with your Nanna?” she said, grabbing my arm.
She knew what my unsafe word was.
“Don’t you ever say anything about my nanna again,” I said, wrenching free.
“I thought you were all about the truth. But when it comes down to it, you’re just like the rest of us. You love living in this lie where you actually matter.”
“I don’t know what the hell you’re talking about.”
She glared at me. There was a fire inside those indigo eyes. “Then why don’t you come with me and test my theory?”
“Why would I go anywhere with you? You’ve done nothing but antagonise me since I got here. What did I ever do to you?”
She stepped closer. Her body almost collided with mine. “You’re a plague,” she said. “All I can sense in you is evil. And if nobody else is going to do anything about it, then it’s my duty to stop you.”
“Stop what?” I said. “I haven’t done anything.”
“You will.”
“And you’re nuts.”
“If you really believed that you would have left by now. So the question is, do you want to know the truth about your grandmother?”
“I don’t need you to tell me the truth.”
I shoved her aside and stalked out of the room. Strains of music filled the hallway leading back to the ballroom. Her footsteps clipped behind me. The look on my face must have been deathly because people shied away when I blew into the room.
Sophie broke apart from Max on the dance floor. “What’s wrong?” she said. I shook my head at her.
Kai was speaking to Jacqueline. He took one look at me, glanced up at Brigid behind me, and his eyes became emerald shards.
“I know she’s lying but she won’t get off my back,” I said. “She keeps saying you’ve been keeping something about Nanna from me.”
His face grew tight. It made my heart correspond in kind. “Kai?”
Jacqueline stepped up to us. “Maybe this is a conversation we should have outside.”
I became rooted to the spot. “I don’t understand.”
Kai tried to grab me, but I stepped back. “Why aren’t you telling me she’s a liar?” I asked. My voice was small, soft.
“What’s going on?” Nora asked. She came up with Sophie. Both of them were staring around, confused.
“Somebody better tell me about my nanna right now before I lose it,” I said. That was all Nora needed to hear. She swept me out of the ballroom. I let her lead me only because I wasn’t thinking straight right now. It felt like I blinked and we were outside.”
“Why stop here?” Brigid said. She’d followed us out. “Why not show her the truth.”
Kai stepped towards her, his jaw tight. “You have two seconds to get out of here –”
“She’s not going anywhere,” I said. Sophie had her arm around me. She was trying to soothe me by rubbing my back, but it just chafed. I didn’t want to be placated. I wanted to know what everyone was trying to hide from me.
“What’s going on?” Durin’s voice called out. He strode down the steps to the paved area where we were huddled.
Jacqueline pulled him aside. Kai tried to reach out for me, but I shrank even farther away. A couple of Nephilim blinked into existence. They were robed in white, their wings retracted. When they joined in Jacqueline’s hushed conversation, something inside me sank. I was prepared for Kai to tell me Brigid was just a liar. Now that I saw them discussing me, I knew there was something not right. There was only one thing that I’d been waiting for since the beginning.
“She’s awake, isn’t she?” I said. He couldn’t meet my eyes. “You asshole.”
“Let me explain,” Kai said.
“Don’t you ever speak to me again!” I screamed. The sound of my voice shattered through the small paved area. It was so loud that the music inside faltered for a second before starting up again.
People appeared at the doorway. I turned to Brigid. “Where is she?”
The Fae was about to say something when Kai grabbed her. I shrugged Sophie off. My vision wavered. The images in front of my eyes blinkered. It was like I was here and not here at the same time. It felt like I closed my eyes for a second and we were surrounded by guards. Four of them stepped towards us.
“Stop!” Jacqueline said.
She raced over and tried to touch my arm. I yanked it back and turned. I didn’t know where I was going but I knew I didn’t want to be here. Brigid had said something about a garden. My feet were running before my head caught up.
“Lex!” Nora shouted. I heard footsteps behind me, but they were inconsequential. Nothing mattered besides getting to Nanna. Opening up the door to my magical eyes, I used the
