houses over out in her backyard. Dressed in her drab sweat suit and curlers, she’s got clothespins in her mouth and a sullen look in her tired, gray, fifty-year-old eyes as she slowly, morosely puts wash on the line. Oswald has heard rumors about the woman, whispered gossip floating around the neighborhood—that she’s battled depression all her life, that her husband left her for a floozy down at the car dealership, that she tried to kill herself last year.

Oswald feels a twinge of something unnamable in the pit of his stomach.

The screen door bangs.
