with double minutes. He tossed an unzipped gym bag onto the front seat, the bag filled with stolen IDs, fake credit cards, a laptop, a handgun, another prepaid cell phone, and yesterdayโ€™s issue of People magazine. He pulled out the magazine and put it next to him on the seat, its front cover facing up.

The last exit on the northeastern extension of the Pennsylvania turnpike was Clarks Summit, near Scranton. Coal country. Loretta was making noise in the trunk; Randall chose an exact-change lane to avoid attention. He dragged her out of the trunk behind a convenience store and crushed her skull with the carโ€™s tire iron. Her body went into the store dumpster.

Meticulous about these things in the past, he was no longer being careful. It was obvious, even to him. He was dying, for Christ sake, so why do otherwise.

Acknowledgments

My apologies and thanks to the people of Niihau in deference to the Hawaiian islandโ€™s history fractured in this novel to better fuel the plot and protect innocent parties. Apologies and kudos to the heroes from the actual Niihau Incident, December 7โ€“13, 1941, including Niihauans Benehakaka โ€œBenโ€ Kanahele (1891-1962; U.S. Medal of Honor and a Purple Heart) and his wife Kealoha โ€œEllaโ€ Kanahele (1907-1974). Third, apologies also to the Robinson family who have owned the island since the 1860s and continue to steward its progress. I appropriated your island proprietorship and used it as a jumping-off point for the sake of some hopefully worthwhile fictional thrills. You continue to do great work for the people of Niihau.

Author/physician Bill Oโ€™Toole, whose suggested revisions made the medical malpractice I perform on these pages somewhat more practical. I listened to you and incorporated your feedback, Billโ€ฆ kind of.

Rerioterai Tava and Moses K. Keale, Sr., authors of NIIHAU: The Traditions of an Hawaiian Island.

Jason Kasper, thriller novelist and mentor with a number of successful thriller series in progress, for feedback and encouragement in completing this project.

JJ Hensley, thriller novelist. Thanks for your last-minute help with this, JJ.

The Severn River Publishing team of professionals headed by Andrew Watts. A great publisher to have on an authorโ€™s side. Cara Quinlan, professional editor, for your fantastic edit.

Actor/producer/writer Paul Hogan. I thank you for the screenplay earworm you gave me that produced the fan-fic climax paraphrasing of your most wonderful, momentous, iconic line (IMHO) of Crocodile Dundee dialogue. Well done, sir.

Past and present members of the Bucks County (PA) Writers Workshop chaired by Don Swaim, including Lindsey (LCW) Allingham, Candace Barrett, Beverly Black, Bobby Cohen, William J. (Bill) Donahue, Natalie Zellet Dyen, Jim Hamill, Jim Kempner, Wil Kirk, Ashara Shapiro, John Schoffstall, Alan Shils, David Updike, and workshop alumni Jim Brennan, Daniel Dorian, Tracy Grammer, and George MacMillan (aka H.A. Callum).

Additional beta readers and peer novelists Al Sirois and Grace Marcus Sirois.

The Rebel Writers of Bucks County (PA) writers group of Russ Allen, Martha Holland, Dave Jarret, Jackie Nash, and John Wirebach (1943-2020). John, my friend, I wish you could have seen this novel in full. You would have liked it. We miss you big-time, bud.

Albert G. Christian, 299th Infantry, the KOA Regiment, Hawaii National Guard, for a memorable WWII quote. A posthumous thanks to you also for your service during so momentous a time in American history.

About the Author

โ€œThe thing I write will be the thing I write.โ€

Chris wouldnโ€™t trade his northeast Philly upbringing of street sports played on blacktop and concrete, fistfights, brick and stone row houses, and twelve years of well-intentioned Catholic school discipline for a Philadelphia minute (think New York minute but more fickle and less forgiving). Chris has had some lengthy stops as an adult in Michigan and Connecticut, and he thinks Pittsburgh is a great city even though some of his fictional characters do not. He still does most of his own stunts, and he once passed for Chip Douglas of My Three Sons TV fame on a Wildwood, NJ boardwalk. He's a member of International Thriller Writers, and his work has been recognized by the National Writers Association, the Writers Room of Bucks County (PA), and the Maryland Writers Association. He likes the pie more than the turkey.
