The memories of how many times he was nearly killed only to be saved by Jill. The pain at Rob’s abandonment. He was still trying to cope with all of it and now he’d had his own kid on the way.
“Chels, it doesn’t matter what you may say. Nothing excuses you from what you’ve done. Why in the hell would you sink so low to become the jealous monster you are? I never would have expected this from you.”
Chelsea sighed. “I lied, Damien. I never wanted this. After I left you on the campus, I spent most of the night sobbing into my sheets. I was hurting so bad because I loved you so much I just didn’t understand why you were so against us even trying,”
She paused. Damien could see she was trying to hold back her tears. “I went for a walk that night and sat down on a bench under the trees near the shopping center. That’s when he showed up. He sat down and was so kind to me. He asked why I was so upset. I mentioned I was having guy trouble so he asked me to go on.”
Despite her pale complexion, Damien thought he saw a hint of shame. “He offered to take me to a hotel so I went with him. I was so upset Damien. I know I shouldn’t have gone but I was hurting so bad! The thought of someone actually caring about the pain that you would turn me away despite all those times I stood up for you against the evil things people would say made me feel better inside!”
More tears broke free of their cold prison sending jolts of pain through Damien’s heart to learn she had been hurting so badly.
“I didn’t know what was going on. We were having sex and the next thing I know, there’s this cold running through my body. It was so cold, it was burning. I passed out and the next minute I’m looking up at Lilith. I never wanted this, Damien. He just did it to me.”
“Who, Chels?” Damien’s fangs elongated at how angry he was.
It didn’t matter that Chelsea hadn’t understood what was going on. She was still one of the only ones who stood by him after everyone else labeled him a freak. “Who did this to you?”
Chelsea choked, brushing a strand of golden hair away from her face. “Stoker. It was Stoker.”
A growl, more wolf than man rose from Damien’s throat. He’d already owed Stoker for all he’d done. He probably did what he did only to get back at Damien.
“He’ll pay for this. I promise you, Chels. He’ll pay for what he’s done.” Damien’s fist clenched at his side. His nails drawing blood from his palm.
“It doesn’t matter, Damien. Stoker isn’t the one who drove me to this madness,” Chelsea’s eyes glowed a ruby red. Her eyes staring lustfully at his dripping hand. “This is all your fault, Damien Pierce. If you would have only given me a chance. If I can’t have you, there’s no way in hell I’m letting that mangy slut keep what should be mine!”
Damien barely had time to move when Chelsea ran at him, hitting him in the chest. The force was hard enough to knock him into the pool. Coughing up water, he rose to his feet, shaking off the dizziness.
Before Chelsea could hit him again, she froze in the shadows.
Damien shook the water from his face to see Kain.
“It would appear I came just in time. I must admit, it is a surprise to see a vampire risk so much just to satisfy her own petty jealousy.” Kain straightened from his leaning position against a nearby tree.
“Stay out of this, Kain! It has nothing to do with an outcast like you!”
“An outcast? Really? I can see Stoker has been telling lies again. Be that as it may, I am not below silencing a newborn who has yet to even break in her new fangs. Leave or I will make sure you will despise the day you were turned.” Kain began stepping slowly towards her, giving Damien time to get out of the water.
“Calen, come back here!” A mother’s call to her pup grabbed the attention of both lycans. A small pup ran towards Damien only to be snagged by Chelsea and raised as a shield.
“Chelsea, no! Don’t!” Damien tried to reason with his friend. “Please, don’t do this!”
The pup began whimpering as the vampire’s hold grew tighter. “Let me go or I’ll kill it. I mean it Kain. Back the fuck off or I’ll kill this mangy dog.” Smirking she squeezed tighter, making the pup begin to gasp for air.
“Calen!” The mother tried to push by Kain only to be stopped. “No! My baby!”
Something inside Damien snapped. The pup’s whimpers of pain combined with his mother’s pleas for his life sent waves of pure rage through him.
Without thinking he threw his full weight into the air, shifting mid-jump to land on Chelsea. The pup went flying as she tried to stop him only to find her neck pierced by his fangs. Her blood flowing from her jugular vein in pools of black tar.
Kain picked up the pup, handing him back to his mom.
“Thank you. Thank you, Kain.” She held Calen close, kissing his furry cheek.
“It’s not me you should be thanking.” Kain’s expression turned sullen as he focused on the sight in front of him.
Damien knelt on the ground holding his friend as she lay dying. Her head resting in his lap.
“Damien? Where am I?”
Damien’s surprised eyes met Chelsea’s own crystal blue. She was once again the friend he remembered. Not the dark, jealous
