I shrug and point to the man behind the desk. βAsk the librarian?β
βAll right, then, letβs do it.β He nods.
Walking forward, Wade makes his way to the large, round oak desk in the center of the main aisle. Itβs clear itβs been set intentionally because it commands the space and draws you straight to it. The artistry in the wood carvings on the front is similar to the work in the admissions office, but instead of someone short and stout, a broad-shouldered man with dark hair and inquisitive eyes scrolls through an old-fashioned-looking library catalogue. On the desk, the nameplate reads: David Chen.
βExcuse me,β Wade says, clearing his throat.
David glances up and grins. βAh, Mr. Hoffman. Itβs a pleasure to meet you in person.β His voice has a tinge of echo to it, and I turn to Wade, raising an eyebrow in surprise.
βIβuh, thanks?β Wade says, shooting me a sideways glance. βSay, I was wondering if you happen to have any information on, uhβ¦β he pinches his lips tight for a moment. βActually, you know what? Do you have a place to view any old magical news articles from thirty years ago or so?β
βWhat youβre seeking is likely all online now, but I can point you to the public computer section,β David says with a knowing smirk.
Wade again shifts his gaze to me, and I shrug sheepishly.
βNo need, I can see it from here,β Wade says, sliding his hand into mine and pulling us both to the right of the expansive room.
βSee, told you. Online,β he chuckles when weβre out of earshot of the librarian.
βOkay, so you win this round,β I say, taking a seat at one of the computers and glancing over my shoulder at the librarian. βCan I ask you something? Did the librarianβs voice seem odd to you?β
βYeah, kinda almost robotic,β Wade says, nodding as he fiddles with the mouse to wake the sleeping computer.
βRight? You donβt think thatβs a thing, do you?β I say, unable to stop myself from eyeing the desk.
Wade shrugs. βI donβt see why not. I mean, youβre a necromancer, for crying out loud. You think an AI is as crazy as it gets?β
βPoint taken,β I say, turning back around and facing the computer. βSo, whatβs the game plan?β
βWell,β Wade begins, letting his fingers fly across the keyboard, βthe only thing I have to go on is what I heard in Mistwood. So, I guess we start by looking to see if there were any other grave robbings back in the late eighties or early nineties.β
I groan. βThis is gonna be like looking for a needle in a haystack.β
Wade nods, but bends in. βExceptβ¦I found something.β
My mouth drops open and I lean in, too. βYouβre kidding?β
βNo, Iβm just good with internet searches.β He twists around and beams at me. βGet this. It says there were two graves desecrated, but thatβs not all. There were some weird vandalizations as well.β
βWeird how?β
Wade leans in, reading a bit further.
βScorched markings over the tops of some of the other freshly dug gravesβdays after the initial robbings. It was unique enough that it drew attention and witnesses saw someone with magical abilities at the scene,β he finally says.
βOkay, thatβs strange and all, but I donβt knowββ I begin, but stop when Wadeβs jaw drops open and the color drains from his cheeks. βWhat is it?β
Shifting his gaze from the computer gaze to me, Wade leans back and presses his fingertips to his lips. His eyelashes flutter furiously as he processes whatever he just read.
βWhat is it?β I press.
βThey had a suspect,β he whispers.
βThatβs good. It means we can track downββ
Wade shakes his head. βIt was my dad.β
Chapter 6
All That Follows
If anyone in school finds out about Wadeβs dad being the prime suspect in what happened thirty years ago, theyβll have him tried and convicted before anyone can change their minds.
With both his dad and grandpa dead, thereβs no one in the family he can turn to in order to make sense out of this mess. And no one else the authorities can point fingers to, at least not as easily.
As I walk down the hallway to Grimoire Protection, my mind is too busy grappling with Wadeβs new dilemma to pay attention to my surroundings. I turn the corner and wind up tripping over my own two feet as the floor ascends upward in a gradual ramp. My books go flying as I reach out to break my fall.
βThat was graceful,β Cat chuckles, rushing up to me.
Colton follows closely behind her, his expression the epitome of shock.
βWow, I guess I was lost in thought,β I mutter, picking up the two books that flew out of my arms and drawing them into to my chest as I stand up.
Catβs dark eyes crinkle at their edges. βAnd people wonder why texting and walking is a bad idea.β
βHa, ha. Very funny, smartass,β I say, making a face. βItβs good to see you guys. I didnβt catch you at all yesterday. Where were you?β
βUgh, donβt get me started,β Cat says, rolling her eyes.
βSomething triggered the schoolβs wards when we came in yesterday and they had to do some tests to make sure we werenβt packing or whatever,β Colt mutters, shaking his head.
βWeird,β I say, scrunching my face.
Colton shuffles to his other foot, watching the floor with great intensity.
βSo, is everything okay now? I mean, it must be if youβre here,β I say.
Cat nods tersely. βYeah, all good. How was the first day for you?β
βOkay,β I say, shrugging. βWeird.β
Quirking an eyebrow, Cat says, βWeirder than us getting stopped at the door before we even make it to my first class?β
βYeah, actually.β I pull my phone out of my pocket to check the time. We still have five minutes before class starts. βHave you guys been hearing anyβ¦rumors? You might not if you were out of circulation yesterday.β
βLike your boyfriend gets his kicks out of desecrating graves,β Colton says, refusing to look up.
My shoulders drop. βYeah, those kinds of
