âDave wuz one er dese yer men wâat didnâ keer much fer de gals,â
leastways he didnâ tel Dilsey come ter de plantation. Dilsey wuz a monstâus peart, good-lookinâ, gingybread-colored gal,âone er dese yer high-steppinâ gals wâat holâs dey heads up, en wonâ stanâ
no foolishness fum no man. She had bâlongâ ter a gemman over on Rockfish, wâat died, en whose âstate haâ ter be solâ fer ter pay his debts. En Mars Dugalâ had bâen ter de oction, en wâen he seed dis gal a-cryinâ en gwine on âbout beinâ solâ erway fum her ole mammy, Aunâ Mahaly, Mars Dugalâ bid âem bofe in, en fotch âem ober ter our plantation.
âDe young nigger men on de plantation wuz des wilâ atter Dilsey, but it didnâ do no good, en none un âem couldnâ git Dilsey fer dey junesey,[1] âtel Dave âmenceâ fer ter go rounâ Aunâ Mahalyâs cabin. Dey wuz a fine-lookinâ couple, Dave en Dilsey wuz, bofe tall, en well-shapeâ, en sooplâ. En dey sot a heap by one ernudder. Mars Dugalâ seed âem tergedder one Sunday, en de nexâ
time he seed Dave atter dat, sezee:â
[1] Sweetheart.
âDave, wâen yer en Dilsey gits ready fer ter git married, I ainâ
got no rejections. Deyâs a pounâ er so er chawinâ-terbacker up at de house, en I reckon yoâ mistâiss kin fine a frock en a ribbin er two fer Dilsey. Youer bofe good niggers, en yer neenter be feared er beinâ solâ âway fum one ernudder long ez I owns dis plantation; en I âspecâs ter own it fer a long time yit.â
âBut dere wuz one man on de plantation wâat didnâ lack ter see Dave en Dilsey tergedder ez much ez ole marster did. Wâen Mars Dugalâ went ter de sale whar he got Dilsey en Mahaly, he bought ernudder hanâ, by de name er Wiley. Wiley wuz one er dese yer shiny-eyed, double-headed little niggers, shaâp ez a steel trap, en sly ez de fox wâat keep outân it. Dis yer Wiley had beân pesterinâ Dilsey âfoâ she come ter our plantation, en had nigh âbout worried de life outân her. She didnâ keer nuffin fer âim, but he pestered her so she haâ ter thâeaten ter tell her marster fer ter make Wiley let her âlone. Wâen he come ober to our place it wuz des ez bad, âtel bimeby Wiley seed dat Dilsey had got ter thinkinâ a heap âbout Dave, en den he sorter hilt off awâile, en purtenâ lack he gin Dilsey up. But he wuz one er dese yer âceitful niggers, en wâile he wuz laffinâ en jokinâ wid de yuther hanâs âbout Dave en Dilsey, he wuz settinâ a trap fer ter ketch Dave en git Dilsey back fer hisseâf.
âDave en Dilsey made up dere minâs fer ter git married long âbout Christmas time, wâen deyâd hab moâ time fer a weddinâ. But âlong âbout two weeks befoâ dat time ole mars âmenceâ ter lose a heap er bacon. Eveây night er so somebody âud steal a side er bacon, er a ham, er a shoulder, er sumpân, fum one er de smoke-âouses. De smoke-âouses wuz lockâ, but somebody had a key, en manageâ ter git in some way er ânudder. Deyâs moâ ways ân one ter skin a cat, en deyâs moâ dân one way ter git in a smoke-âouse,âleastways datâs wâat I hearn say. Folks wâat had bacon fer ter sell didnâ hab no trouble âbout gittinâ rid un it. Hit wuz âgâinâ de law fer ter buy things fum slabes; but Lawd! dat law didnâ âmount ter a hill er peas. Eveây week er so one er dese yer big covered waggins would come âlong de road, peddlinâ terbacker en wâiskey. Dey wuz a sight er room in one er dem big waggins, en it wuz monstâus easy fer ter swop off bacon fer sumpân ter chaw er ter waâm yer up in de winter-time. I sâpose de peddlers didnâ knowed dey wuz breakinâ de law, caze de niggers alluz went at night, en stayed on de dark side er de waggin; en it wuz mighty hard fer ter tell WâAT
kine er folks dey wuz.
âAtter two er thâee hundâed er meat had beân stoleâ, Mars Walker call all de niggers up one ebeninâ, en tolâ âem dat de fusâ nigger he cot stealinâ bacon on dat plantation would git sumpân fer ter âmember it by long ez he libâ. En he say heâd gin fiâ dollars ter de nigger wâat âskiverâ de rogue. Mars Walker say he sâpicionâ
one er two er de niggers, but he couldnâ tell fer sho, en coâse dey all ânied it wâen he âcuse em un it.
âDey waânât no bacon stoleâ fer a week er so, âtel one dark night wâen somebody tuk a ham fum one er de smoke-âouses. Mars Walker des cusst awful wâen he founâ out de ham wuz gone, en say he gwine ter sarch all de niggersâ cabins; wâen dis yer Wiley I wuz tellinâ
yer âbout upân say he sâpicionâ who tuk de ham, fer he seed Dave cominâ âcross de plantation fum toâds de smoke-âouse de night befoâ. Wâen Mars Walker hearn dis fum Wiley, he went en sarchâ
Daveâs cabin, en founâ de ham hid under de floâ.
âEveâybody wuz âstonishâ; but dere wuz de ham. Coâse Dave ânied it ter de lasâ, but dere wuz de ham. Mars Walker say it wuz des ez he âspected: he didnâ bâlieve in dese yer readinâ en prayinâ
niggers; it wuz all âpocrisy, en sarveâ Mars Dugalâ right fer âlowinâ Dave ter be readinâ books wâen it wuz âgâin de law.
âWâen Mars Dugalâ hearn âbout de ham, he say he wuz mightâly âceived en disappâinted in Dave. He say he wouldnâ nebber hab no moâ conferdence in no nigger, en Mars Walker could do des ez he wuz a mineter wid Dave er any er de resâ er de niggers. So Mars Walker tukân tied Dave up en gin âim forty; en den he got some er dis yer wire clof wâat dey uses fer ter make sifters outân, en tukân wrapâ it rounâ de ham en fasten it tergedder at de little eenâ. Den he tuk Dave down ter de blacksmif-shop, en had Unker Silas, de plantation blacksmif, fasten a chain ter de ham, en den fasten de yuther eenâ er de chain rounâ Daveâs neck. En den he says ter Dave, sezee:â
ââNow, suh, yerâll wear dat neckliss fer de nexâ six montâs; en I âspecâs yer ner none er de yuther niggers on dis plantation wonâ
steal no moâ bacon dyoinâ er dat time.â
âWell, it des âpeared ez if fum dat time Dave didnâ hab nuffin but trouble. De niggers all turnt agâinâ âim, caze he beân de âcasion er Mars Dugalâ turninâ âem all ober ter Mars Walker. Mars Dugalâ
waânât a bad marster hisseâf, but Mars Walker wuz hard ez a rock.
Dave kepâ on sayinâ he didnâ take de ham, but none un âem didnâ
bâlieve âim.
âDilsey waânât on de plantation wâen Dave wuz âcused er stealinâ
de bacon. Ole mistâiss had sont her ter town fer a week er so fer ter wait on one er her darters wâat had a young baby, en she didnâ
fine out nuffin âbout Daveâs trouble âtel she got back ter de plantation. Dave had patienâly endyoed de finger er scawn, en all de hard words wâat de niggers pileâ on âim, caze he wuz shoâ
Dilsey would stanâ by âim, en wouldnâ bâlieve he wuz a rogue, ner none er de yuther tales de darkies wuz tellinâ âbout âim.
âWâen Dilsey come back fum town, en got down fum behine de buggy whar she beân ridinâ wid ole mars, de fusâ nigger âooman she met says ter her,â
ââIs yer seed Dave, Dilsey?â
âNo, I ainâ seed Dave,â says Dilsey.
ââYer des oughter look at dat nigger; reckon yer wouldnâ want âim fer yoâ junesey no moâ. Mars Walker cotch âim stealinâ bacon, en gone en fastenâ a ham rounâ his neck, so he canât git it offân hisseâf. He sutânly do look quare.â En den de âooman busâ out laffinâ fit ter kill herseâf. Wâen she got thoo laffinâ she upân tole Dilsey all âbout de ham, en all de yuther lies wâat de niggers beân tellinâ on Dave.
âWâen Dilsey started down ter de quarters, who should she meet but Dave, cominâ in fum de cotton-fielâ. She turnt her head ter one side, en purtenâ lack she didnâ seed Dave.
ââDilsey!â sezee.
âDilsey walkâ right on, en didnâ notice âim.
ââOH, Dilsey!â
âDilsey didnâ paid no âtention ter âim, en den Dave knowed some er de niggers beân tellinâ her âbout de ham. He felt monstâus bad, but he âlowed ef he could des git Dilsey fer ter listen ter âim fer a minute er so, he could make her bâlieve he didnâ stole de bacon. It wuz a week er two befoâ he could git a chance ter speak ter her agâin; but fineâly he cotch her down by de spring one day, en sezee:â
ââDilsey, wâat fer yer wonâ speak ter me, en purtenâ lack yer doan see me? Dilsey, yer knows me too well fer ter bâlieve Iâd steal, er do dis yuther wickâness de niggers is all layinâ ter me,âyer KNOWS I wouldnâ do dat, Dilsey. Yer ainâ gwine back on yoâ Dave, is yer?â
âBut wâat Dave say didnâ hab no âfecâ on Dilsey. Dem lies folks bâen tellinâ her had pâisenâ her minâ âgâinâ Dave.
ââI doan wanter talk ter no nigger,â says she, âwâat beân whipâ
fer stealinâ, en wâat gwine rounâ wid sich a lookinâ thing ez dat hung rounâ his neck. Iâs a âspectable gal, I is. Wâat yer call dat, Dave? Is dat a chaâm fer ter keep off witches, er is it a noo kine er neckliss yer got?â
âPoâ Dave didnâ knowed wâat ter do. De lasâ one he had âpended on fer ter stanâ by âim had gone back on âim, en dey didnâ âpear ter be nuffin moâ wuf libbinâ fer. He couldnâ holâ no moâ praâr-meetinâs, fer Mars Walker wouldnâ âlow âim ter preach, en de darkies wouldnâ âaâ listenâ ter âim ef he had preachâ. He didnâ
eben hab his Bible fer ter comfort hisseâf wid, fer Mars Walker had tuk it erway fum âim en burnt it up, en say ef he ketch any moâ niggers wid Bibles on de plantation heâd do âem wussân he done Dave.
âEn ter make it still harder fer Dave, Dilsey tuk up wid Wiley.
Dave could see him gwine up ter Aunâ Mahalyâs cabin, en settinâ
He had wrapâ de chain rounâ wid a rag, so it didnâ hurt his neck; but wâeneber he went ter wuk, dat ham would be in his way; he had ter do his task, howsomedever, des de same ez ef he didnâ hab de ham. Wâeneber he went ter lay down, dat ham would be in de way.
Ef he turn ober in his sleep, dat ham would be tugginâ at his neck. It wuz de lasâ thing he seed at night, en de fusâ thing he seed in de mawninâ. Wâeneber he met a stranger, de ham would be de fusâ thing
