The Skunk
I have a little friend, who's colored black and white.
I'd introduce you to him, but he's mostly out at night.
He has a little trick, he can stamp his little feet.
he can balance on his two front legs, which really is quite neat.
he stands like that, and now, can swing his butt around.
He then will quickly lift his tail, and firmly hold his ground.
He now takes aim, and this is done in utter pure perfection.
Do not stay within his range, if he points in your direction.
A salvo of obnoxious fumes, is headed out your way.
It will remain upon your clothes, forever and a day.
If you decide to use a bus, or train to take you home.
You'll have the place all to yourself, you'll sure be left alone.
I'd like to take my little pal, to school for show and tell,
But teacher said get out of here, that critter smells like.......well
Now if you think, what I've just said, is just a lot of bunk
I'll introduce you now, to my good friend, the skunk
Eagle Peeps Celebration
Now's the time for celebration
all across the Eagle Nation
The statue has been dedicated
all the tributes have been stated
So put aside your tears and weeps
join us all at Eagle Peeps
Dad seems to have found, a new mate
another cause to celebrate
So smile for times that are ahead
with eagles, friends and Mr. Ed.
Don't forget the times that passed
the memories, will always last
The future comes at a fast pace
so now put on your happy face
I'm sure we'll welcome it with zest
so let's all watch the eagle's nest.
The Great Horned Owl
The great horned owl's kind of a brute
for cuteness he don't give a hoot
He sleeps in the day,
the nightime's for play
and he's dressed in a feathery suit.
He hasn't got come hither lips
his face is on a bag of chips
is he really wise?
or is it a disguise?
Watch out, that he don't give you nips.
Rodents no problem, they'll be dead
He'll work, while you're still in bed
no mess round the house
pelletizing each mouse
easy clean up, you'll have then, instead.
He silently drops from the skies
with eyes, like big pumpkin pies,
he watches his prey
at night or the day
he's a cat in a feathery disguise.
The ears on the top of his head.
are just feathers, no ears so it's said
he does have great hearing.
fly right through a clearing.
and listen for mice in their bed.
Now that you've have met "GHO",
Most of the facts you now know,
If on Halloween,
this bird can be seen,
he's scary, but that's just for show.
Tom Turkey
There was a turkey named Tom
he was raised on a ten acre farm
His outlook was gray on that November day
his body was filled with alarm
Thanksgiving was coming next week
about this he never would speak
he hid in the shed, if not he'd be dead
but through a window he would sometimes peek
The farmer would carry a hatchet
the turkey, he tried hard to catch it
The bird hid by a pail, but out stuck its tail
and the farmer would then try to snatch it
One day when Tom was distracted
the farmer quickly reacted
he grabbed poor Tom, tucked him under his arm
shocked by the speed the farmer had acted.
Tom was placed in a cage on a truck
it seemed that he ran out of luck
he was in the fear that the end was soon near
with the hatchet he might soon be struck
The truck then stopped by a house
a man stood there with his spouse
They chatted away and then one did say
Dick Chaney is out hunting grouse
The couple moved into the garden
they said he was signing a pardon
for whom could it be, I wish it were me.
as the ink slowly did harden
This pardon was white house tradition
and didn't need a petition
Tom was soon free. for all folks to see
this bird in splendid condition.
White-breasted nuthatch
There is a little bird, who lives in my hometown.
he is the strangest bird, as he's mostly upside down.
He may come to your feeder, for a seed or two to take.
he really does like best, to peck a suet cake.
He searches bark for insects, and his wings may start to flutter.
when he finds somebody's feeder, is filled with peanut butter.
The constant nasal chatter, whenever he's around.
you'll know exactly who it is, when you just hear the sound.
How they named this bird, I really do not know.
he's surely not a nut, and hatched a while ago.
Through snow or heat of summer, at any time of year.
he migrates not at all, so always will be here.
As you watch this small bird's antics, you'll never have a frown.
because this little bird, is mostly upside down.
Christmas Eve at the WCV
It was Christmas eve, and it started to snow.
The lights at the center, were beginning to glow.
The animals knew, that Santa was near
the sound of the sleigh bells, were getting quite clear
When the team reached the center, they moved slow as molasses.
It was then Dr. Dave said, "I think Rudolf needs glasses"
Some of the reindeer, no longer could fly
but after some treatments, they reached for the sky
Santa was noisy, so I jumped out of bed
on closer inspection, I saw it was Ed
He sat in the sleigh, eagle rare by his side
it was out in the open, there was no need to hide.
He lifted the bottle, and took a wee snort
then looked in the sack, at the gifts that he brought
There were peppermint mice, and a strawberry rat
These were for eagles, and Sophie the cat
A few little treats, were then left their for cubby
and some water he added, to ole Buddy's tubby
A few tempty treats, for our little friend snitch
and some creme and a balm to cure some critters itch
Since life was still hanging, on in the snow
and he got a treat, of some miracle grow
Each animal got, a cracker quite crispy
There was even a rodent, for the owl called misty
And where was ole Santa while all this took place?
he hung out with the mods just stuffing his face
There were cookies and sweets served up on a platter
Ole Santa just sat there getting fatter, and fatter
The hour grew late, it was time to head home
Ed looked at me and said, "don't print that poem".
He walked in the door, and stoked the yule log.
then on the computer, to be on the blog.
Here is my poem, I give it to you
and my wishes for Christmas you'll find in here too.
Merry Christmas
The Carolina wren
There is a little bird, A real fine feathered friend
He just happens to be, a Car-o-lina wren
He is not very big, in fact he is quite small
but when he starts to sing, you think he's 10 feet tall
His voice is very loud, like it was heavy metal
3 times he seems to call, for a really old tea-kettle,
You'll see him on a branch, calling to his bride
and if his call has worked, she'll soon be at his side.
he sits inside the woodpile, on the branches he's a dancer
he'll give a real loud call, and then await the answer.
When I go in my shed, he knows just what to do
For in a little while, he'll join me in there too
While I work in the shed, he tries to find some eats
some spiders, flies, or maybe, some other insect treats
There is one thing, I really have to mention
he always holds his, tail so it is at attention
When snow is on the ground, and your body starts to shudder
its time the little wren, would like some peanut butter.
when checking for a nesting place, He'll check out what you've got
Then probably he'll just settle for a simple hanging pot.
For now we'll say so long, to our Car-o-lina wren
until we hear his call, and then we'll meet again.
Let's make a difference
Your children now will never meet, a Carolina Parakeet.
The passenger pigeon is gone too, the last one died while at the zoo.
Their flocks at one time blocked the sky, who thought that soon they all would die.
We have to learn now to protect, and treat animals with more respect.
The southern swamps seem strangely still. We hear no more the Ivory-bill.
Is it gone? we can not say,.but hope he will be found some day.
The list goes on and is too long, it's time to correct what we did wrong.
To kill our wildlife is insane, who wants to shoot a whooping crane.
Yet someone will pick up a gun and shoot an animal just for fun.
and if the shot doesn't leave him dead, he'll no doubt die when he eats the lead
How many times is oil to spill, and foul our waters and slowly kill?
We contaminate our very lives, its a wonder anyone survives.
The time has come from now and hence, for us to use some common sense.
Lets save this place that we have soiled, Come together and save this world.
The new year's here, lets start anew. to save the planet is what we'll do.
If we do wrong the future's dark, because there's no Jurassic park.
