The Pier by Mary H. Collins (ap literature book list txt) π
Excerpt from the book:
The Pier is a contemporary portrayal of a young woman torn between her first love and the rebound boyfriend. Although Carrie spends most of her time with her new boyfriend, Dave, she canβt stop thinking, dreaming, and occasionally seeing her first love, Toby.
The Pier contains a love story within a love story. As Carrie struggles to identify her feelings, she learns that both her mother, Sheila, and her aunt, Dora, each found themselves in similar predicaments, each making a different choice. Pondering the choices made by her mother, who chose to marry the man who betrayed her, while Dora married her fiancΓ©βs best friend, and her own passionate dreams about making love to her ex-boyfriend, Carrie tries to make the right choice. Unlike Dora, Carrie wishes to marry the right man the first time.

the pier for a while longer.β
βWe hang out there every night. Could you at least ask? Iβd like to go with them.β He continued to urge her.
βIβm sure my parents wonβt let me. Besides, I have to work tomorrow. Uncle Reggie needs me to help with lunch. If I stay out late, I wonβt feel like working.β
βOk, Iβm going. Iβll see you tomorrow.β
βMy mom is taking me shopping for school clothes tomorrow after work. Do you want to come along?β
βIβll let you know.β He turned, walking away with Zack and Molly.
Carrie got on her scooter, started it up, and rode home, broken hearted because Toby left her alone on her birthday. Oh well!
βIs that you Carrie?β Her mother called from the kitchen.
βYes mom, itβs me. Thanks for cleaning up after the party.β
βWhy are you home so early? I thought youβd hang out with your friends until eleven as you usually do.β
βI want to get to bed early.β She lied, going into her bedroom and locking the door. When her mother knocked a while later, she pretended to be asleep.
The following morning, Carrie rose, dressed in her work uniform, khaki shorts and white T-shirt, and headed downstairs to the kitchen.
βIs Dad already gone to work?β she asked, taking a bite out of a piece of toast.
βYes, he left early. Reggie needed him to run an errand. Remember Iβm picking you up at three to go shopping.β
βYes Mom, I have a list of things I need for school.β She finished the toast, downed a glass of orange juice, and rushed out the door.
