Vel’s mother turned deaf to his arguments. With a stern look she told him, “If you want me to be with you, do in the way I tell you.” Vel’s father never objected to his likings. Silently he supported him, yet he did not tell his mother anything against her demand also.

Vel and Dora got engaged in the following week. Their parents fixed an auspicious day for their marriage. Dora’s gang of friends came for her wedding reception and made the place filled with their cheerful laughter.

At the dining table, Vel asked Dora slowly, “Are you angry with me?”

“Why?” Dora looked at him with puzzle. “My mother insisted on 20 sovereigns of gold.”

After a laugh, Dora answered him without any hesitation. “Nothing wrong in it. She has given me the permission to have you within my hands.” Dora softly pressed his left hand and with a sigh added, “That is the price I have to give.”

 

Dora knew better than Vel, the place of a woman in the Indian society. Though a woman is educated and earns a lot, the society gives the pedestal to a man only. Still there is a long way for the women to go and she is not an exception.
