She just stared at him. “What do you mean?” Aunt Harriet cried, “Why?” “Go up stairs, Lettie. I’ll come up in a bit.” She got up and walked, silently up the stairs, not looking at them. When she had gone, her father took a deep breath and began to explain. “Since Emma died, I’ve always had Jane, Emilie and Annabelle here to help me with Charlotte. But now they’re gone, I really am struggling; we don’t have enough money, enough food, and when winter comes...” He trails off, shaking his head. “But I can give you money, why didn’t you just ask me?!” “That’s kind of you, Harriet, but it’s past that now.” He smiled, warmly. “Don’t worry, I’ve sorted it; I’ve joined up and found a place for Charlotte.” “You’re joined up?” She shook her head in disbelief “for Christ’s sake, Robert! Think about your fourteen year old daughter, she hasn’t got a Ma and you want to practically kill yourself?!” “Harriet. I wouldn’t get killed, I know I wouldn’t.
