“It’s lucky I’ve found a place for you.” “What?” Charlotte and Aunt Harriet exclaimed, in unison. “I’ve found a place for you.” He said again, more carefully this time. She just stared at him. “What do you mean?” Aunt Harriet cried, “Why?” “Go up stairs, Lettie. I’ll come up in a bit.” She got up and walked, silently up the stairs, not looking at them. When she had gone, her father took a deep breath and began to explain. “Since Emma died, I’ve always had Jane, Emilie and Annabelle here to help me with Charlotte. But now they’re gone, I really am struggling; we don’t have enough money, enough food, and when winter comes...” He trails off, shaking his head. “But I can give you money, why didn’t you just ask me?!” “That’s kind of you, Harriet, but it’s past that now.” He smiled, warmly. “Don’t worry, I’ve sorted it; I’ve joined up and found a place for Charlotte.” “You’re joined up?” She shook her head in disbelief “for Christ’s sake, Robert! Think about your fourteen year old daughter, she hasn’t got a Ma and you want to practically kill yourself?!” “Harriet. I wouldn’t get killed, I know I wouldn’t. She’s got a lovely place to place to stay, and I trust the people she’s with so, if by chance, I did die, I know that they’d know the best thing for her.”
