Doctor
Blood pressure.
Nurse 1
Falling. Sixty over thirty.
Doctor
Pulse?
As the emergency attendants work furiously on Marvin, the second nurse turns to Maribeth.
nurse 2
You'll have to leave.
MARIBETH
NO!
The second nurse turns to the patient again.
NURSE 1
We're losing him.
Doctor
Defibrillator.
Nurse 2 wheels the defibrillator into position, applies gel. Nurse 1 stops heart massaging, steps back. The doctor takes the paddles, firmly placing them on Marivn's exposed chest.
doctor
Clear.
Three sets of eyes flash to the monitors.
doctor
Again. Clear.
The monitors continue in flatline. The doctor and nurses look down at Marvin in defeat. Silence for a second or two, and then Maribeth screams.
MARIBETH
No! Do it again!
Doctor
I'm very sorry, miss. He's gone.
The doctor lays the defibrillator paddles on the sheet below Marivn's chest. He glances sorrowfully at Maribeth once again, and then he and nurse 1 leave. Nurse 2 places the paddles onto the unit, and then looks at Maribeth.
Nurse 1
Why don't you go out with...
MARIBETH
No. I have to stay. Just let me stay, please.
The nurse leaves hesitantly. Directly through the ephemeral body of Anselm looking on.
Maribeth throws her body over Marvin's, weeping uncontrollably. Marvin's spirit lifts from it'sprone position. He glances sadly at crushed Maribeth; reaches with a hand toward as he rises. Retracts the hand when it passesthrough her face, and then floats to Anselm. He gazes at the angel imploringly.
MARVIN
Why? Why did you allow this to happen? What cruelty drove you, Anselm?
Anselm unfolds mighty wings of pure white and wraps them around Marvin's spirit. He draws Marvin close. looks into the distraught spirit's face. He smiles.
anselm
You have all eternity to understand, Marvin. Everything is as it should be; your redemption is nearly complete. Go back, my friend. Revisit the dream. Iβll wait.

Marvin sails head over heels through rushing clouds. He suddenly finds himself deposited on a path. The sun hugh overhead shines brightly in a dark blue, cloudless sky. A wood-railed fence. A grove of trees just beyond it. Amy is there on the path, and she takes hold of his hand. She holds a word in the shape of a large leaf in the other hand. The word is "Desire". She hands it to him with a smile.
AMY
This belongs to you, dear Marvin.
Marvin accepts the gift, looking at Amy. He glancesdown at the word, then up at Amy once again.
MARVIN
We were here so long ago it seems.
AMY
Yes. We've always been here. Come with me, now.
Amy, beautiful as the stars in Heaven, dressed in white linen, leads Marvin up the path. When they arrive at the crest of the hill, she gently squeezes his hand, and then they stop. With her free hand, she waves an arc across the vista. A city, glistening and pure gold rests, with a verdant forest on two sides. The path they are on leads to the city.
AMY
Look, Marvin. Down there. Do you see her? She's waiting for you. Go to her. It was always her.
Marvin looks longingly at Amy, and then follows her pointing finger. Down the hill five hundred paces another young woman stands immobile, just outside the open city gates. She sees Marvin and begins to run toward him.
AMY
It was her, Marvin. Not me. It was she who redeemed you. Who truly loved you as you were. Go now, I must return. Someone awaits me in another dream.
Amy releases Marvin's hand. Her figure slowly recedes back down the hill into a dazzling cloud of swirling white. Marvin watches for a second. Two. He finally turns as she disappears. The young woman is nearing. Her hair is blonde. Her blue eyes sparkle. She is shouting his name. He recognizes her. Maribeth. He steps forward and walks, his arms stretching out toward her.

Dedication:
Marvin Fuster, irascible old homeless drunk, has finished retrieving his dinner from a dumpster behind a posh restaurant one lovely summer evening. He slips and falls headfirst onto his head, and his world goes black. He is found and rushed to the emergency room of the local hospital, in and out of consciousness. Over and over an incredibly vivid dream keeps recurring in which he meets a young woman more beautiful than the stars in Heaven, and it sticks. Days later, after he awakens (and sees an angelic form in his hospital room), he sets out on an impossible journey to crack the riddles of the human gene, reverse his age (with a potentially lethal brew he mixes), find the woman he KNOWS is in the city...and then win her heart.
