played with his food at the acquired silence, which followed. โIโm sorry,โ He muttered.
โNo Jack,โ Cathy said. โI feel it too.โ She smiled.
โI feel that way about Charles,โ Robert admitted. His friend smiled and nodded in agreement.
โI must admit,โ Brian said thoughtfully. โYou do look familiar to me. Maybe we have had some sort of out of body experience, or before-life event.โ
โMaybe it was just an accidental meeting,โ Brianโs wife said. โYou might have met Brian at an airport or one of his book signings, or in the mall.โ
โMaybe,โ Jack agreed. โMaybe it was a river,โ
โYeah,โ Cathy said. โA river. . .โ
The families thoughtfully spent the rest of their meal together. As they were preparing to close Brian raised a glass for a toast, โHereโs to accidental meetings,โ He said with a smile. โYes, to accidental meetings!โ Everyone joined the toast.
โAnd hereโs to friendships that were always meant to be!โ Jack said. โHere, here!โ The families agreed. Their glasses clinked together in agreement, as Jack smiled at Cathy.
After they finished eating and cleaning up the Thanksgiving Day meal, the men went to watch the Thanksgiving Day football game, while the women went to the sitting room to talk. Mary left to go off with her boyfriend Kyle, and Jack and Cathy went for a walk by the creek below the family farm. For a few minutes they walked hand in hand listing to the bubbling water and birds singing in the trees. Sunlight streamed through the brakes in the tree line warming the couple.
โWere you telling the truth?โ Jack asked as he helped Cathy sit on a bolder overlooking the creek.
โAbout what,โ Cathy asked as Jack sat beside her.
โFeeling like weโve meet before,โ Jack asked. He looked at the river. โCathy, I felt like Iโve known you for years.โ
โI feel that way about you too Jack,โ she said as the breeze caused the ruffle of her red dress to flap gently. She smoothed it out and started playing with her hair.
Jack leaned over and gently pressed his lips against hers. He pulled back and looked at her.
โIโm sorry,โ he started. โI donโt know what came over me.โ
Cathy looked at Jack and smiled. โItโs okay,โ she said and kissed him back. โI know this is the first time weโve kissed, but I felt like weโve done it before.โ
Jack ran his hand through Cathyโs hair and touched her cheek.
โCappy?โ he asked. โI called you Cappy, didnโt I?โ
โI donโt know,โ Cathy said. โMaybe you did. What does it matter Jack? We are right here, right now together. And isnโt that all that matters?โ She put her hand on his and smiled.
โI guess youโre right,โ Jack said looking at the sparkling creek. โI guess some things and some people were meant to be.โ
โAnd if theyโre not like theyโre suppose to be, God will work it all out.โ Cathy added. Jack smiled at his girlfriend and the two sat on the bolder watching the creek gently flow to the Great Pee Dee River, which flowed to the Atlantic Ocean.
THE END.
