had a deal," I interrupted. βI passed your ridiculous test now I want my memory back and I want to leave this hell hole now!β
βRight you are. Nurse Hilda,β He said turning to the nurse and stretching out a palm up hand. βThe pill please.β The nurse nodded, picked up a tiny, zip lock bag and placed it in his hand. He opened the bag, held it in front of me and dropped a single pill capsule onto my open hand. I looked at it to see the number 57 indented into it.
βSo I just swallow this and itβs done?β
βThat is the idea, yes,β Dr. Watts said. So I swallowed it and it had an all too familiar sour lemon taste that was in my mouth when I woke.
βSay ahh,β The nurse said, looking in my mouth and then nodding to Dr. Watts.
βGreat, now that you have swallowed the pill I guess I can tell you the truth,β He pulled a chair in front of me and sat down, looking at me in the eyes. βI lied.β
βWhat?β I said, suddenly feeling a bit dizzy.
βI lied about everything. Well, almost everything. For one thing youβre not just a random person we picked up off the street; youβre Amalia Kay, a traitor to your country and a prisoner of The Facility. You killed a total of ten people, including the Vice President, in a bombing you caused, so they sent you here. Youβve been here for eight years and the pill you just took isnβt going to give you your memory back, itβs going to remove it again. This is the 8th time you took this test, and it wonβt be the last.β
"But you promised," I slurred.Everything was going dim again and I felt fuzzy.
βYouβre going to take a long nap, and when you wake up, you wonβt remember a thing," he said, or at least I think he did.
"I'll remember this, I swear!" I tried to yell, but I don't know if it ever came out my mouth, because only a few seconds later everything went black.
And everything went back.
ONE YEAR LATER
I woke up with the taste of lemon in my mouth. As my eyes adjusted to the bright light I realized something: I donβt know where I am. And then I realized something else: I donβt know who I am. Imprint
