I thought. They're too afraid of that velvet book. Their own life.
By then, I was panting heavily, creating a ring of fog around my face. One more deep breath... and I felt the papery substance of sky between my fingers, as it ripped across the middle. But then, pausing abrubtly, I saw white behind that pleasant sky. I leaned closer, lost in amazement. To think: no grey, hard stone across the earth, an end to this antiseptic misery... a cry of anger split through the air, and I remembered what was behind me, what was at stake. Once again, sky tore apart, making way for the image of balls of white floating towards the ground on the other side of reality. I stepped into the snow, I knew it would be there. I had made a map earlier of the surounding enclosures. it would be cold. What I did not know, and what I wondered then, was what strange beings I would encounter in this world. What moved in the tumult of white, what breathed and lived. What other clueless souls would apear... no time to think. I breathed heavily, felt a rush of blood through my veins, the pound of powdery snow below my boots, the sound of concrete below their boots... and I was off. Running, faster than those beihind me. I heard the portal of sky mold back together. all part of the creator's plan. Keep in the people who will obey, let the people who question die on their own accord, vanishing from all recognition and memory. But I wouldn't die out here, I couldn't. I had to find the truth.
