his dad. His mom shuffled the two younger children out of the room, enticing them with a snack from the vending machine if they left quickly. And they did.
As his dad moved to the chair next to the hospital bed, the young man struggled to find the words to say. His dad had always been the perfect example of a man who will forgive and forget, but the young man was not. βDad, I, uh. Itβs really good to see you again.β
βItβs good to see you son. Your mother and I have been looking for you tirelessly since the day you left. We havenβt gone a single day without praying for your return.β He put his hand on his sons forearm as he spoke.
βI didnβt mean it.β
βWhat didnβt you mean?
βI didnβt mean the things I said the night I left. Iβm sorry Dad. I wish I could take those things back.β
βI know you do son. Itβs ok. We all say things we donβt mean when we get mad.β
βIβm sorry about changing the friends that I had, and for letting my new friends dictate my actions. I didnβt realize it at the time, but I lost a whole lot more than a couple of friends.β
βAnd we lost a son. But youβre home again, safe and sound. And thatβs what matters the most.β
βAre you mad about what I did?β
βNo, not one bit.β The man replied without hesitation.
βIβm lucky to have a dad as understanding as you. I donβt deserve a second chance with you after what I did.β
Both men we fighting back emotions as they reconciled. βYouβre my son. You and I are going to argue, and disagree. We have your whole life. What makes people a close knit family is their acceptance of each other, and knowing when someone has simply messed up. I love you son, but you absolutely need to know that no matter what happens, no matter how bad our arguments are, there is nothing on this earth that will prevent you from being my son.β
βYouβve always been there for me.β The young man said as he stopped his attempt to hold back emotions and began to cry as he reached out to hug his dad.
βYour mother, your brother and sister, and me, weβre your family.β He replied as he embraced his son, βYour family will always be there for you son. Always.β Imprint
