below her eye. I sense that this was no murder!β
βWhy is that?β
βWell all these are the sign of a very rare plague. You may remember it. It was mentioned in a story from not too long ago. Have thou read 'The Masque of The Red Death'?β
βWhy yes. Why?β
βBecause all the symptoms of the disease are found in your sister and in you.β
βI beg your pardon?β
βDo you wish to know what I believe happened to your wife?β
βPlease, tell.β
βWell, I believe that she is not your wife, but your cousin.β
βYou dare call a lie from my mouth?β
βOh I do not call, sir. I know who you are.β
βEnlighten me!β
βWhat I failed to realize in the investigation of the last Monroe was that there was a familiar face at every scene. The face of Sir Argile Monroe! I knew your face was familiar, but, I didn't want to seem rude until I was certain. Tonight, I solve the case of both Monroes. For it was you who killed Madeline and Catherine. Quite premeditated, I must admit. You knew that your cousin was in an affair with Doctrine when I first met them. So you blackmailed her. You threatened to tell her father of her affair and have Doctrine killed! So she did as you wanted: assisted in the murder of her niece. That day, I discovered the fingerprint of Catherine Monroe. Upon this, I decided that it was not important and that they were only from hugs or friendly contact. After the murder, you and Madeline escaped towards your new estate. But, on the way you passed the kingdom where Poe's 'The Masque of The Red Death' was based on. Little did you know that the Red Death was no mere figment of Edgar's imagination; it is real! On passing through, you and Catherine picked up a minor case of Red Death plague. As time passed, the mental state of you and Catherine began to drive towards death and madness. Then, the land passed into a time known as 'Eternal Night', a time when the sun never rises below the clouds; it was always dark! Your cousin began to go into insanity. You did not know if she could keep her secret or not. So, you threw her into the garden with no food, water, or shelter. She died by the trip after she was weakened enough. You then, to reduce the possibility of your conviction, called Doctrine in an attempt to get us alone.β
βThat is quite an assumption.β
βAnd now sir, you shall admit the deed.β I say, casually, as I step forward and pull a pipe from my coat. I then took the pipe to the side of his head. He fell to the ground. Asleep. Unconscious.
βSir, how did you know?β Doctrine asked, amazed.
βDoctrine,β I began, βthis is a dark, complex business. Here, let me explain to you as we return home, together!β
