sounded like all hell had broke loose. Julie came running from the bedroom ran over to Ray who was looking out of the living room window to see what was going on when he noticed the activity was all round the back of the flat. slipping his shoes back on and Julie sliding her feet into her pink slippers that matched her dressing gown headed in to the back garden and to the gate and tried to look over to see what was going on but the gate was too high so Ray opened it to be greeted by torch lights dancing all over the place people shouting and generally just a lot of commotion, Ray shouted to a policeman who was nearest Julie's gate and asked what was going on but before he could finish his question he was told to get back inside now. so they did as they were asked or should I say ordered.
Ray and Julie went back inside and kept a watch at the window but could not see anything at all. it was now approaching seven o'clock and it was still quite dark but you could make out the bright sky slowly appearing over the horizon, Julie decided to get dressed nothing as glamorous as the night before just a pair of jogging bottoms and a vest top. after throwing a jacket on Ray and Julie decided to go out of the front door and try and find out what was going on at the back of the flats in the lane. this time remembering her keys she pulled the front door behind them until the Yale lock clicked shut.
They made there way to the end of the flats where a crowd had gathered. Julie and Ray pushed there way through the crowd to the entrance of the lane where a policeman was standing stopping anyone from entering the lane. Ray called out to him asking what was happening but the policeman just ignored Ray's query at the same time Ray could see down the lane and there up against Julies fence was what looked very much like a body draped in a sheet and a hive of activity from paramedics and police. the crowd at the end of the was talking about the body of a girl was found raped and strangled about half an hour ago. seconds later a black van with blacked out windows slowly reversed down the lane to the point just short of were the covered body was lying. And within seconds the van was laden and driving back out of the lane and away towards the hospital.
Ray went back to Julieβs flat with her, put the local radio station on hoping to find out what was happening and they didnβt have to wait long when there was a bulletin about a girl found raped and strangled in the early hours of this morning and if anyone had any information or if anyone had witnessed anything unusual to call a special incident number provided by the local police,
Julie said to ray that she should phone and tell them about last night. Ray agreed and dialled the number for her and Julie told a policewoman on the other end of the phone everything she could remember from the night. Julie hung up the phone turned to Ray and started shaking her eyes wide open pupils big and black, she just realised that the girl in the lane could have quite easily been her. Ray didnβt waste any time in reassuring her with a hug and a few words of encouragement telling her that she will be OK and the police wonβt take long to catch him, Ray didnβt know how long it would take but had to make Julie feel better.
A week had passed and a very long week that Julie hardly left her flat just worrying that the rapist was out there somewhere when the police finally got a break and traced the guy who raped and strangled the girl. They found him through DNA which was found during the autopsy of the young girl. The guy ended up getting jailed for life on the Isle of White in Parkhurst the same prison the Kray twins, Peter Sutcliffe and Ian Brady were incarcerated. It took a long time but Julie finally got over the thought of it might have been her in that lane that fateful night, and it wasnβt long before she got a flat on the other side of town away from the memories, ever since that day Julie was the most vigilant woman you could ever meet.
