walked out of the cafΓ© toward the woods. At the clearing overlooking the valley, he kissed me passionately. Then, as I began to press my body against him, his grip on my shoulders tensed. I let go. β€œDid you like it?” he asked. β€œWhat a question, I love you.” I was short of breath. β€œWould you consider sharing mv life?” he said in a challenging tone. β€œNot marriage, necessarily,” he added. Blissfully, I paused; before I could answer, he went on: β€œEven if you discovered that I am not who you thought I was? -Just look,” he warned. β€œDon't come near me,” and he slowly stripped. When he rolled down his briefs I couldn't stifle a cry. Substituting his manlihood was now a purple gash - the cross he'd painted on the little girl. I must have fainted, for when I saw him again, he was lying by my side with his clothes on and, smiling, β€œThis is the true Dominique,” he said with a slight tremor in his voice. β€œYou have all the time to decide whether you still want me.”
I've given myself a full year. During this time I've gone out with half-a-dozen men, trying to block him out of my mind. We've abided by the promise and we did manage to avoid each other. - It's been horrendous. For him, to be scorned and derided - and we call ourselves a 'civilized' nation - for me, knowing everything that was going on, unable to defend him directly. Yet, I couldn't shut up and I made countless enemies. There is no residue of doubt left, it is Dominique I want, it is Dominique I need. Love does, in our case, transcend sex. When I feel the urge. I'll just go to Blaise or to Pascal.
Ten days left before our agreement expires. They are the longest in my life.

DOMINIQUE: The television interview was Moira’s idea. She was right: one battle was not enough; we had to square up with our environment. People don't leave you in peace unless you force them to. There will still be a lot of hostility, but I feel much stronger now. I've come to love this place and it is our home.

I just wish she had not spoken about her grief for the loss of my manlihood. It only adds more fuel. I suppose it is a part of our predicament. It is the beginning of happiness. Imprint
