it once more hoping nothing else would interrupt her. As soon as she placed the bowl on the floor Big and Little slurped the water up and the bowl was gone again. Instead of filling the water back up she grabbed the silver food bowls and scooped three cups into them and gave them to the dogs. Walking back into the bedroom she through some clothes on and slipped into a pair of sandals. She washed the dishes, started the laundry, cleaned out the refrigerator, swept and vacuumed the floors. This cleaning frenzy went on for another hour. The house was spotless. Alison finally sat down and faced the truth, she had to see what was in the mailbox, that was all there was to it.
Her hand was on the door knob, she called Big over to her to chain him up while she walked to the edge of the street. She walked not to quick and not to slow. She tried to walk as normal as possible, not like someone running wildly to the mailbox causing a big scene. This was just a weird situation that confused the shit out of her. Alison stopped at the road and grabbed the handle of the mailbox. As she pulled the lid down she tilted her head and look inside. Like she first thought it was a crumpled white piece of paper folded in half and then in half again. It looked like it had been through the ringer. The paper had smudges of dirt all over and the corner looked as if it had been wet at some point. She picked it up carefully then grabbed the weekly paper and whatever else came today. Alison quickly walked up to the house and unhooked Big from the chain and opened the door. After hooking Little up she shut the door and sat down at the table. She pushed everything aside and set the piece of paper in front of her. Staring only for a moment longer she started carefully unfolding the paper.
Alison didnโt know what to think, didnโt know what to feel. This shouldnโt be happening to her. โI am nobody!โ she thought.
โWhat the fuck is going on?!?โ she almost screamed.
She closed her eyes and took deep breathes in her nose and out her mouth. โClear your mindโฆ.clear your mind.โ She told herself. Alison opened her eyes slowly and read the note again.
You are
In danger!
Please leave now!
What was she supposed to do now? This was nuts she thought. Why would I of all people be in danger? Ridiculous! Alisonโs mind swirled around inside her skull like a tornado. She was trying to think of anybody her had the slightest hint of a grudge towards her. Someone popped into her mind, Stacy. That was the whore that broke up her marriage. Five years of marriage and a total of nine years of her life gone. But why would she have a grudge, wouldnโt I be mad at her. This brought her to another thought, her ex-husband. She had to admit the separation was nothing less than dramatic and border lined on being a divorce that ended in death.
They met when she was just sixteen. Alison was working part-time at a diner in town. Even though she was dating someone else he caught her eye. Besides being tall, brown-haired with green eyes, it was his mysterious ways that intrigued her. She later found out that the mystery she was attracted to was a man that needed to control things, everything. The deeper the relationship got the more she saw that he really wasnโt the man for her. He insisted on her staying home while he went out saying that if anybody was to hurt her or make a comment he would kill them. They married three years later. Sometimes she thinks that she was brainwashed somehow. Who would stand by and be treated like an object, a slave for him to do as he pleased. How could she do that to herself? Five years of marriage and she finally started thinking like a normal person would. According to her ex-husband, David, she never did anything right. She didnโt clean right, didnโt remember something, hell didnโt even have sex right. Even on the rare occasions that he was in a good mood, he still wasnโt happy. He was never happy unless he was controlling someone, making them believe that he was right and he could do better and go farther. And if whoever was listening disagreed it was an argument. Finally before their fifth year anniversary she discovered what she knew all along, David was having an affair. It was a blessing in disguise for Alison. She had tried to leave before but he got so angry. Threaten to shoot all the cars in the driveway and to kill himself. What was she to do? She was scared, so she just stayed. She constantly started thinking of ways to leave. Even thought of killing him to get away. Then one day Alison had come home from the grocery store, David was out doing whatever he did. She was carrying in the bags and putting them on the kitchen counter she saw a manila envelope lying by the stove. Curiousity always got the best of her she thought as she opened the package. A person in this situation would usually cry, scream or even throw things, but Alison just laughed. Photographs. Pictures of her husband and that slut. Finally hard evidence he couldnโt refute. It was time. By the time David had returned from god knows what, Alison had all her things loaded into a Uhaul truck. She was just pulling off when he drove up. She smiled and waved goodbye. The pictures she left on the counter where she found them, sprawled out in a line.
Alison thought she had thought it through. She rented a tiny apartment two towns over. Her lawyer she hired assured her that he wouldnโt find her. Two weeks after she left she was finally feeling normal again. She could breathe, she felt like talking to people and making new friends, just living life again. It wasnโt much but she got a job working at a fast food place. She didnโt care, she felt like a new person. She felt great. Alison worked the late shift most of the time. After closing one night Alison was walking up the stairs to her apartment and saw him. David was propped up against her door. As soon as she went for her phone he darted after her. She ran down the stairs as she told dispatch where she was. Forgetting to keep her eyes in front of her she slammed full force into a park car. He jumped on top of her and beat her with his fists.
โYou wont get shit out of me you bitch!!!โ he screamed at the top of his lungs.
He stopped hitting her and leaned in close to her ear. Breathing hard from the chase he whispered, โ I told you once, you canโt leave meโฆIโll kill us both before I let you go.โ
She barely heard what he said, but knew that whatever it was , it wasnโt good. The only thing she heard before seeing and hearing nothing, were sirens. She woke up in the hospital black and blue. She had won she thought. She finally won, he went too far this time. And Alison was right, David went to jail and she was granted the house, the cars , and alimony.
