The Things I Can See

I would have never thought that always being in the hospital and being as drugged up as I was, I could see things most people couldn't. Always getting hurt, and pills, pills, and more pills. My life was always full of injuries and still is and I'm 49, still living with my mother, no wife, and no children. But when I was younger, things happened to me. When I was around 5 years old, I turned blue. But not because I dyed myself, but because I was a curious child. I always wondered if the refrigerator light would turn off when you closed it. So I decided to take out all the pots and shelves and stand inside and leave the door open a little. But of course, my little brother Jesus who was 1 year old at the time came in and closed the damn door on me. I’m not sure what happened to my mom let me out.

β€œPor ser pendejo, ΒΏQue pasΓ³?”(For being stupid, What happened?) she questioned madly

I was stuck in the refrigerator for maybe half an hour. After my mom got me out, I was blue. Because my mom can’t drive, I had to be picked up by a stranger to take us to the hospital. I'm guessing my mom didn't have trust issues because… Who lets some random person drive them some were? I can't remember a lot from that day but I just remember my dad not being there because he worked on fixing railroad tracks and I wouldn't see him until Friday because he left on Monday and didn't come back for a few days.

A few years passed, and I think I was maybe 10 or 11 years old. My dad had this mysterious object that can charge batteries, although it wasn’t meant to charge batteries. I used to see my dad using the mysterious object, and I thought it was cool and wanted to see if it would charge my batteries. When my dad wasn't looking, I went outside to charge the batteries for my remote-controlled car. I put the batteries in the object twice, and then a  third time not knowing what unpredictable thing would happen next. The next thing I knew, there was smoke all over me, a heavy smokey smell in the air, and an ashy feeling running through my fingers. The worst part was that the metal pieces ended up in my eyes and I couldn't see. I remembered it burning, and it hurt so bad I can't even explain. My mom got someone to drive us to the hospital, and I remember her sobbing because she didn't want me to die.

I told her, β€œNo llores mama, dios me va ayudar.” (Do not cry, mama, God will help me). I was amazed in maybe two months I had my full vision back. I went up to my mom yelling one morning telling her I got my vision back. I remember it being the best feeling.

My last story wasn't necessarily my fault and it all started when was 14. I had been in boy scouts since I was in kindergarten and that one year our group went on a trip to a camp, I already knew the place soi knew where things were and the schedule. I had gone every two years but this one trip was almost the same until I got hurt. Every time we went, it snowed so it was a perfect time to go sledding. I was taking a break and went walking not thinking anything would happen. While I was walking, i heard a strange noise. The sound was getting louder like someone yelling. As I look up the hill, i see my friend sledding down looking like he was freaking out and trying to stop. I ran, but not fast enough because I got hit. When I got hit, i didn't just fall. My friend's sled went through my cheek. I saw how the snow soaked up my splattered, red blood as my cheek hit the ground. I felt very dizzy and almost passed out. It hurt so much. My scoutmaster (Mr. Englebrightson) came running trying to help. This wasn't the first time I got hurt during a boy scouts trip, Mr. Englebrightson was really scared to call my dad because my dad was extremely strict and would get mad over anything. So mr englebrightson called my dad and my dad came as fast as he could to take me to the hospital. Many of my back teeth fell out and my cheek ripped really bad. I got everything back fixed with a lot of scars. In fact, i still have the scars on my face which are a symbol of all the painful memories I have had.
