What is Book Swap?

Book Swap is a creative way for students to be introduce to a variety of topics.

Step 1:

Students are encouraged to bring in their favourite book

Step 2:

Students circulate to look at different types of novels to see what interests them





Curriculum Grade 4

1.1 read a variety of texts from diverse cultures, including literary texts (e.g., myths, plays, short stories, chapter books, letters, diaries, poetry), graphic texts (e.g., graphic novels, diagrams, brochures, graphs and graphic organizers, charts and tables, maps), and informational texts (e.g., textbooks, non-fiction books on a range of topics, print and online newspaper and magazine articles or reviews, print and online encyclopedias and atlases, electronic texts such as e-mails or zines)


How does Book Swap relate?

-Children are able to see a variety type of texts and may choose a type of text that they would not normally would have

-Teachers can choose a specified category of the Book Swap - ie poem or newspaper articles





Precautions

- Ensure that your children have access to books

- Check the books before they are shared to ensure they are appropriate

- Be careful that your class stays on task



Next Lessons

- Have children choose a novel/book/text to read

- Create an assignment about the book

- Have children to create questions based on what they saw from textual features



Other Variation

- Have children rate the book and write a review

- Create a written trailer/ preview

- Instead of walking around, have the students present the topic to a small group or class
