Getting Ready

Hello, I am Jack Mabal. I am here to show you how to build a home-made board game. Doing this is much easier than you think. All you need to start is your brain.
The hardest part is using your brain. You use it to come up with an idea. This is much harder than it seems. Right now, use this time to think of an idea. I recommend something you question about or something you love.
Got your idea,..., good. Now answer this question. How can you turn this idea into a board game?
Now let's look at your progress. You have a game idea. So far, that's a good start.
Noramlly, for me, it takes 15 to 45 minutes to develop a board game idea. If it took you sooner, I am very impressed (not that I had doubts or anything).
If you are having trouble, ask someone for help. Either that, or read this next paragrah.
You can start in a different country, you can search for underwater treasure, you have to break out of a building. Anything like that is a great idea. Just remember that it's going to be a game.
Add suspence and possibly drama, or how ever you like. As long as your having fun, you are making faster progress.
Now, back to that question. How can you turn this idea into a game? Let's say you chose a race. In a real race, you would have a start and finish line, one or more opponets, obstacles and details. That's a perfect board game!!!!!!!!!!!
You have a start line, you have spaces to move, you have challenges, you have details and you have a finish line.
BOOM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
There's your game. Now try something like that with your idea. Don't forget to add LOTS of detail.
Now, sketch out your board game in you head. Once that's over, DON'T RIGHT OUT YOUR BOARD GAME NOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are more steps before that.

What About The Cards?

Right now, you are off to a great start, but listen. How many "well known" board games do you know that have cards in them? ... Exactly. Make your game have cards for suspense and tragedy. For example, let's mention that race game I talked about in chapter 1. Here are some card examples for that game.
"Tripped on Track, skip a turn" or maybe, "Wrong Track, go to start". Those are great card ideas. These are some things you can make your cards out of.
You can get index cards (which I recommend) or if that's too big, cut them in half. You may also get cardboard paper and cut them to the size that you like. You can do the same thing with regular paper and/or construction paper.
Next, you should (obviously) write them out. You would probably like to write them with a pen or pencil.
Remember, here are some tips: Use things that can happen in real life. Be creative with your cards. Make some (or all of them) funny.
Use this time now to write your cards.
Got them, ..., good.
Now, in this next chapter, you will (finally) , MAKE THE GAME!!!! WOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

Finally, The Game Board

Congratulations!!!!! You have made it so far in your world of making a board game. Now, let's break the ice and make your game board.
Now, let's start off getting some paper. I recommend printer paper, construction paper, or poster board paper. Right now, get these paper products now.
Now you will NEED a pencil or a pen or etc. Now, think of the game "CANDY LAND".
In "CANDY LAND", there are little boxes (spaces) where you can move your character. Your game should be like that. Now, I am not saying you should make your boxes colorful and draw cards to move(but it is perfectly OK if you do). Or maybe you want to move like you do in the game "SORRY!" or move by a dice, I couldn't care less. As long as you do it how ever you like, I am sure it is perfect.
If you are still having trouble, get some other board games you all ready have and use them as references. That is what I do with almost all of my board games that I have created.
Now, use this time to design your game board.
Got your game board all drawn out ,..., HOLYCOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YOU HAVE ACCOMPLISHED SO MUCH SINCE WE FIRST BEGUN. You are super close to playing your board game.

How Do I Play?

Now that you have your game finished, there is one question that lies on the table. How do I play my board game? It is quite simple really. All you have to do is make them up.
Really, it's that simple. You don't need any help from me anymore.
