THE REDNECK FROG FROM TEXAS

By Patty DeGroff

It was a blustery morning and the sand was
billowing high. That's when Tarly the bull frog came wandering by.
He had a ten gallon hat and he made a shadow twice his size. And yes indeed he had a sparkle the shape of a star dead center in his eyes.
He waltzed up to that there pond and tipped his hat he did. For the other toads out there
were watching on you see. They weren't too friendly so you know what he did. He brought forth the greatest of muse.
He turned his hat upside down and Tarly climbed aboard. He used the feather in that there hat to get him away from the shore. Howdy he yelled about trying to find a new friend. I am Tarly he replied with a wide Texas grin.
Silence fell upon the pond except for a splash or two. You see out on the range and only this one pond they were ready for a duel. Who are you one toad yelled out and Tarly turned his way. He replied I be a Texas toad some call me a redneck you want to play?
Not a word was spoken and Tarly hung his
head.Couldn't figure out what was wrong or maybe it was something he had done. He found the place unhospitable so Tarly decided to move on and he rowed himself back to shore.
Just as he got back to shore he saw another
Toad there he climbed from his hat and tried to tip it like a gentlman but wasn't quite aware.
His hat had taken on water and as he tipped it low and behold. He drenched the new friend before him and the show was on.
Before him was Lillyput the finest female frog for hundreds of miles. Farly saw what he had done and he tried to dry her and give her a red neck hug to show how sorry he was. Hey my man Lillyput replied what's wrong with you boy? This just aint right.Farly begged her forgivness and stepped back a ways and Lillyput stood with a frown on her face.
Tarly said excuse me mame but I am new about these parts and the others they pushed me out. Could you tell me if there is another pond where I might find some friends. Cause this here redneck needs someplace to begin.
Lillyput brushed herself off and said do tell now who might be sending you away without a proper muse. He turned to the pond only to find no one in sight. Then he turned to Lillyput with those stars in his eyes. My goodness boy it's no wonder they treated you that way. For out here we just dont dress that way. Get rid of that hat and those silly cut off jeans and boots then maybe just maybe
they will except you in the lean.
Tarley looked at Lillyput and replied Oh man I can't go without my atire. I gotta have my hat for those hot days out thar. And the jeans well honey that just cant be for its my style my way. Fer iffen I lose my Ten gallon hat how would I cross the pond he did say.
Lillyput laughed and shook her head and told him you might try swimming instead. Try it you might like it and he thought on it a bit. Then threw down his hat and jumped in he did. Yihaw now honey this aint bad atoll wy no one ever told me I could swim back yonder at my home.
After the pond dried up back home the heat was unbearable indeed. And I found myself this ten gallon hat and it come in handy for me. Look here would you like to take a ride and Lillyput giggled and at first denied. Then all of a sudden she said ok but I get to row it and choose the way.
Well the two of them went sailing across the pond and before he knew it old Tarly was a singing a song. Lillyput was really takin in the sights and not noticing the other frogs they were passin by. All of a sudden that there hat began to rock. And before they new it they was in the water and the hat was on top. Lillyput swam ashore but Tarly remained and he was not amused at their silly games. He rescued his hat and set it up to dry then looked about at the other frogs laughing till they cried .Tarly walked right over to them and began to laugh himself .Then when all went silent he got to know the others pretty well.
There was Jr he was a big toad and was mighty strong. There was Jake no bigger than a whisper fart always ready to bail. Goober well he was a little daft but everyone let him join in and Tarly repled say how come you boys wouldnt talk to me when I tried to make friends.
Not a word was spoken then old Goober spoke up. Said we was shocked at your atire and thought you was a quarter shy of a full duck. You see around here we are natural as can be. And you wont find any of us boys wearing a hat and some raggedy things .
Well Tarly thought on it a bit and said what the hoot. He shucked those cut off's and those funny shoes. He tossed that there cowboy hat way up yonder in the trees and whispered in Lillyputs ear how about a swim with me. Have you ever wondered why on the river where all those sparkles comes from. Wy it be from those stars in the eyes of all of Tarly and Lillyputs daughters and sons.
