Unlucky for some: Prologue
The icy rain pounded down on Krystl as she trudged along in her black school pants and blazer. Her cobalt orb clips were loose in her light brown hair. She sighed and pulled them out before placing them in her blazer pocket. She only had three pairs of orb clips left, a cobalt pair (the ones she was wearing) a cyan pair and a Chartreuse pair. She lowered her eyes back to the ground as she started up the hill.
A crow squawked to her right and she immediately threw herself towards the wooden railing. Something glittery and silver fell in the place sheโd just stood in. Krystl turned and waved to the crow sitting at the top of the sycamore tree. โThanks pal! Coming to school tomorrow?โ she yelled. The crow responded with a squawk. Krystl smiled. โSee you there!โ and she turned away. She looked down at the thing that had fallen. It was a bracelet. The band was made of black woven cotton and the charm. The charm was a bluey-silver and was studded with tiny spots of colour. The charm was shaped like the number 13.
A ripple of excitement flooded through Krystlโs body. The number 13 was here lucky number, but that wasnโt what excited her. The charm was made of platinum, and now that she looked closer she could see that the tiny spots of colour were actually tiny Ruby, Emerald, two stones of Jade, a single diamond star, a single turquoise heart, a triangle of polished onyx, and, at the top was a teardrop shaped sapphire. She rushed home to get changed and have a closer look at this masterpiece.
For an ordinary girl, life is about to get turned upside down, all because of a piece of cotton with a charm shaped like a number, the number 13; unlucky for some.
Unlucky for some: chapter 1
Shaking back her wet hair, Krystl sat on her bed. She searched in her draw for a second before pulling out a hairdryer. She dried her hair and then turned it onto the tightly weaved cotton band attached to the bracelet. Once it was dry she looked it over then slid it onto her right wrist. Suddenly there was a flash of blue light and a tiny fluttering figure appeared. It spoke in a tinkling voice, like a bell โso, you are the new Platinum Guardian?โ Krystl gaped.
โ...and then you have to finish by shouting โunlucky for some but not for me, your hidden power is something only I can see, release your energy!โ chirped the little fairy. Krystl sighed.
โOk. So I need to look out for purple aurasโ that look like wings?โ she asked. The fairy nodded.
โYes, purple. But... Krystl... You also need to look out for....โ she stopped and sniffed.
โGo on.โ Krystl encouraged
โThe black aura. There are only about a hundred in this country.โ Said the fairy unhappily.
โBlack aura?โ this from Krystl
โThey are the leaders of the shadow tribe, the bringers of darkness, creators of nightmares that will make your skin crawl; nightmares that will make you sweat icily, nightmares that you will wake from, screaming and clawing at your arms and also, nightmares that you will never awaken from.โ
โBlimey!โ
โYeah.โ Replied the fairy. โOh and by the way, my name is sapphire, but please just call me Saph.โ
Krystl smiled. โOh... โK Saph.โ The fairy returned her smile.
โGoodbye!โ Sapphire waved. In a flash of bluish light she disappeared. Krystl walked to her window, threw it open and gave a swift whistle. Then she dragged her feet along the floor till she reached her bed and threw herself face down into the soft pillow and blankets. She had to tell someone what she had to do .She had to save the world. She heard a flutter of wings and a soft caw. She sighed and pulled herself onto her side. She smiled at the crow perched on her sofa. She stroked his glossy feathers and said โHey Caw. You wonโt believe what Iโm about to tell you...โ
Unlucky for some: chapter 2
Caw looked at her, disbelief in his tiny black eyes. She smiled. โDonโt you trust me Caw?โ Caw tipped his head the other way in thought. โWell, do you trust me, Caw my friend?โ Caw dug his head into his feathers for a moment before looking straight at her and nodding furiously. She breathed a sigh of relief. โYou could help me you know.โ She added. Caw was ecstatic. Krystl guided him over to the window and allowed him to fly out.
She sat at her desk and drew. She drew sapphire, her blonde hair falling dead straight down her back to her torso, her lightweight white dress with the sapphire teardrop shape just under the breast. Her delicate silver tiara, pointed ears, her crystal bright blue eyes and her sapphire ballet shoes. It came out almost exactly as she pictured it. A few minutes later and she glanced outside and bounded downstairs.
The rain had turned to drops of sun and that was good for her. She scrambled outside and onto her bike. Her hair was tied back in a loose ponytail and the sunlight was glowing on the wet street. She careered down the road only to nearly hit an old friend. She swerved him very neatly but crashed into a wall and was flung backwards. Her head hit the pavement and she cursed in agony. Her ponytail had thankfully taken away most of the force from impact but it still hurt. It seemed like a few seconds then he was beside her. Grey eyes. Ginger hair. The world swam above her but she still managed to deal him a sharp slap across the face. โYou have a lot to answer for...โ she said before she blacked out.
Unlucky for some: chapter 3
โA piano? What the hell... is that oak? No! Blimey! Itโs Agarwood! CRIKEY! Huh?โ Krystl muttered, stroking the top of a pale piano lovingly. It had a smooth finish. A moment later the bottom nearly dropped from her stomach. He was there, in a chair. She sat next to Him and shivered. She tapped out a light-hearted melody on the ivory and ebony keys. It rang out as clear as a bell, what tune was that? He looked over. She didnโt pay attention to what He was saying. She just moved closer. She flicked her head from side to side as the world dissolved. Both in her dreams and in real life a tear rolled down her cheek.
She stroked her finger along the wall, the teardrop hadnโt even hit the floor when she had re-materialised. Laughing in the corner was a group of people she knew, among which was Him. An adult walked up to Him and she uncomfortably had to listen in on their convo. Three words struck her like a knife. โHole in heartโ Biting her lip, she ran upstairs. She panted and shoved open a door. โMust find... must tell someone... need help... โ she ran through a corridor, searching fruitlessly for her friend. She ran back downstairs and out of the building, she tore across a small distance and nearly crashed into her friend. โhelp.โ She whimpered before collapsing onto all fours and panting heavily, tears rolled down her face, one crystal bright drop at a time. The bell rang out and she sucked up her exhaustion and turned. She walked into class, still shaking. She motioned for her friend to sit. She sighed. โHe has that thing BB had.โ She whimpered softly. He looked at her confusedly. โA Scottish accent?โ he asked. Krystl shook her head.
โNo! A hole in the heart!โ she said, much too loud. He looked at her and panic flashed through her at his expression. โNo! Iโm having a nightmare! This isnโt real!โ she yelled triumphantly.
Krystl blinked and squinted against the sun. She heard a sigh of relief from her left. โYou!โ she said, scrambling to her feet. His ginger hair shone in the light from the setting sun. His eyes, his eyes were exactly the same as she remembered, cold and hard as steel, showing only the very faintest trace of emotion. Few people could read them easily, she was one of them. โWhy didnโt you come round? I gave you my address.โ She said. He didnโt reply. She gave a sigh and took a gasp of air โLewis.โ
Unlucky for some: chapter 4
Lewis glanced at her. โHi?โ he said nervously. To this day, Krystl doesnโt know why he never came round. โYou were crying.โ He added pointedly. Rage boiled inside Krystl. โWhat do you care!? You never cared! Ever! I stood by you when you were crying at the nursery fence, Iโm no good with consolation but I was there! I took it heavily when you hit me in the chest, sure, but you winded me! What about when you hit me with that tree branch, or when you were getting stones thrown at you and I stood in front of you and took them! Or even when you dropped me into the fence!? The list goes on!โ and rage expressed she broke down and cried bitterly. โAll I wanted was you to care for me as I cared for you.โ She said, so softly, so quietly, he barely heard it. He looked at her shaking form on the floor but he never truly realised what a mark heโd imprinted on her. No-one did. They thought of her as weird and insane, it was his fault. โLoveโ was a word she heard rarely from anyone but family. They avoided her or bullied her for being different. Only one person knew her deepest secret. A friend sheโd probably never see again. Shantelle.
Krystl grabbed her bike and tore down the street. She pushed it across a road, lifted it and jumped, pressing on the handlebars. She pushed herself into the seat and pedalled furiously. And, as it had done so many times before, the bike released the anger and sadness that had built inside her. And for a few minutes she forgot the worldโs fate rested on her shoulders.
Will the added burden be to much for her? Only one way to find out.
