Mandy was an ordinary mouse that lived near an ordinary tree, in an ordinary mouse-hole, in an ordinary wood. Everything was very ordinary and very, very boring! Mandy was so tired of doing the same thing all the time, that one day she threw up her arms and said, "I wish something special would happen to me!" And with that she went for her usual walk.
As she walked the well-worn path she always took, Mandy heard a strange noise. She was very curious and decided to find out what was making it. After a little while, Mandy began to get tired because the noise never seemed to stay in one place. When she sat down to rest, the noise surrounded her. It became so loud that Mandy had to cover her ears! All she could do was hope that it would go away. Mandy became very frightened and started to run away. All of a sudden! There was a bright light right in front of her! As she stared in fright it became brighter and brighter until hurt her eyes to look at it. Then the light was gone as quickly as it had come! Mandy rubbed her eyes and blinked. When she opened them she saw a tiny golden moth floating where the light had just been. "Did you do that?" She asked, not expecting an answer. Mandy was really surprised when she heard a tiny voice say, "Yes I did."
"But youβre just a moth!" Mandy squeaked.
"No Iβm not," said the moth, "Thereβs a lot of magic in this little body."
In the blink of an eye, there was a beautiful fairy fluttering where the moth used to be! Mandy was so surprised that she nearly fell over! The fairy said in a gentle voice, "My name is Teenee and youβre Mandy Mouse right?" Mandy couldnβt believe what was happening. "Yes I am, but how did you know that?" She asked.
"I know everything, silly," giggled Teenee. "I know that you are good mouse with a kind heart and so when I heard your wish I decided to make it come true."
"My wish," Mandy squeaked, with a puzzled look on her face.
"Yes, your wish for something special, silly!" Teenee giggled again. She smiled softly and asked, "What is the most exciting thing you can think of?"
"Meeting you is the most exciting thing that has ever happened to me!" Mandy said in awe.
Teenee laughed and as she did showers of gold fell from her wings. "Why thank you, but I meant the most exciting thing to do!" She said.
Mandy looked up shyly and said in a little voice, "Wellβ¦ Iβve always dreamed of flying."
Just then, Teenee grabbed Mandyβs hand and headed for the sky! At first, Mandy was very scared but then Teenee said, "As long as you hold my hand you will not fall. Look around-- isnβt beautiful!" Everything was breathtaking! The stars seemed close enough to touch and the moon smiled at them. Mandy could not believe how beautiful the world really was!
It seemed like only a minute had gone by before Teenee put her down in front of her mouse hole and disappeared in a flash, leaving a trail of gold dust and laughter behind her.
The next morning Mandy thought it had all been a wonderful dream. But when she looked out her window a tiny golden moth was waving at her! Mandy smiled as she waved back.
She would never forget the special something that happened to an ordinary mouse that lived in an ordinary mouse hole, near an ordinary tree, in an ordinary wood.
