He would always show up to the youth group an hour early to get ready. He was fourteen and his parents would drop him off and pick him up. He brought his backpack but it wasn’t filled with the books and folders you would normally expect from a teenager. No, this backpack was different, and it held the contents to a new blooming identity. He had his wig, his make-up, his skirts and blouses. An hour gave him just enough time to transform into “her”.

She sat there at group as Happy as could be… a positive energy that could fill the room. Of course, she’d stay a little while after group to transform back into the teenage boy before his parents could pick him up. What would seem like a lot of work to someone from the outside, appeared to be a joyous process once you got a little closer. One day he came into my office and asked if I thought it was ok that he changed before group started because he didn’t want to be a bother to anyone. I responded, “As long as I’m here, I want you to feel safe to be who you are.”
