Fairy 'N Frog

So then, there was this frog. He'd rather go un-named, frogs don't give much away, at first. He's a regular kind-a dark green and tiny frog - pretty busy eating and watching the flying things. He'd never seen anything fly by he couldn't zap with his sticky tongue. Alder leaves weren't very tasty, though.

Most of the day he would watch the flying things, enjoying the dance of their flight and generally would find it a very calming way to fall asleep.

Many winds brought frog to slumber before he'd seen the fairy-thing. Looked like it had wings and would be yummy. Just as his tongue lashed out to snap it up, the fairy disappeared.

'How impossible,' thought the frog, 'that anything could escape once deemed yummy'

Frog considered it strange that the fairy didn't re-appear, β€œTrick of the light,” He croaked.

A wind blew in smells of cedar. No cedar trees near this lake- and again he saw the fairy but missed her. Each time she world re-appear a new scent would come to him. The fifth time through this frustrating dance, the smell was of honey suckle on his tongue- but there was none for miles. Why did this fairy thing taunt him?

She was smitten. His shiny greenness un-like any she had seen before. Why would he eat her? But he kept trying and failing.

Soon enough the frog realized the fairy thing appeared in the same spot every time and so he stood at the ready. Tongue loose for action, eyes open and especially aware, this time he would get his meal for sure.

He cricked, β€œCome on!”

His wait was short and just before she appeared he scented a rose-hip faintly. His tongue is quick and she was stuck to it the moment she re-appeared.

But quickly the frog found himself in a large, dry green meadow. No lily-pad or lake, no buzzing flies - just more fairies. The one on his tongue began to taste like paste!

His eyes crossed as he focused on her face. She crossed her eyes back at him, then demanded he release her.

He couldn't say anything in his defense as she began a tirade of insults upon his family.

Frog spat and choked a little as the fairy was released and his tongue popped back in - dry from too much airing. His skin quickly felt the dryness and this was not good at all.

He crouched to begin a long hop towards water and found instead the crazy fairy thing sitting a top his head.

Her noises were quite odd. He felt he should sing along. The urge to snap her off his head was tempered in remembering how tasteless she was. He cricked and croaked along with her and began to wonder where this song was leading. Certainly the lake seemed no closer as he hopped along.

She tried to tell him he'd never reach the lake without her help and she asked him for road-tax, a fee for her services but he just kept croaking and cricking along as if she were inviting him to song.

The poor and helpless beast did not know he was in peril. Fairy was no longer stuck to him, there would be no way to transfer him back to the lake as a tag-a-long.

She would have to get him to stick his tongue on again... and after hours of his hopping towards nowhere and her flitting, flitting before him, and he ignoring her the whole time, what - at all- could she do?

β€œMake it rain” Said a voice within.

And so she looked at her flowers and at her cedar and had to re-arrange them in her heart so it would seem they were dry, very dry. And she had to cry for them.

The rain came in a soft mist and saturated the frog, who stopped his hop and tasted the air as his thirst satiated.

Fairy realized his tongue was out. She landed right in the middle of it and quickly did her magic.

Frog tasted her bland feet and opened his eyes, spat her out to see his beautiful lake before him and his lily-pad underneath him!

Fairy floated away on the wind, sadly unnoticed, and returned to sop up the mess she made.
